Why do Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Chrysler sell so few cars?
Fiat is a mere shadow of its former self.
Only 3 passenger models and 2 commercial models are now sold in Australia. Together they’ve managed just 434 sales to April 2020.
The Abarth 124 Spyder is a Mazda MX5 with a pair of Dame Edna glasses on. It has a drive-away price of $38,750, but the Mazda is nicer looking, if not quite as fancy. It has sold just 33 examples to April 2020.
Fiat 500/Abarth is fun looking, but the overpriced 500 Aparth starts at 28,450 drive away, rising to a stratospheric $53,656.
The interior is cramped, the automatic is appalling, and the engine of the base model 500 is just 51kw. The top 500 manages 132kw, and a 01-100 of 6.9 seconds.
The cabin is awash with nasty plastic, and it is impossible for a person of 6’ to get comfortable.
Like the rest of the Fiat Chrysler stable, 500 has had recalls, but this one was a doozy. 500 was recalled because the axle could break, causing an accident. That is simply unacceptable.

Most of us will think of the beautiful Fiats, such as the iconic 124 Sport and 130 Sport. They were magnificent. Not only were they good lookers, but they drove elegantly.

They were of a time, but money worries, bad management, and poor quality have dogged the brand, and its sister brands Chrysler, Alfa Romeo. and Dodge.
In fact, Chrysler sold only 20 of their “300” halo cars to April 2020. To add to their woes, for executives stole money, gave away cars and out the company into a dire financial state. In 2015, Clyde Campbell was accused of theft, and giving cars to Shane Warne and Elizabeth Hurley.
Alfa Romeo is not much better with on 200 sales for the same period. 3 of the excellent, but overpriced 4C have been sold. The remaining sales are: of 69 Giulia, 38 Giulietta, and 90 Stelvio SUVs.
There is a sense of a fading star about Fiat Chrysler. They sell far fewer cars than the 10,501 Holden sold to April 2020. Holden will be defunct by the end of 2020, so one wonders how long Fiat Chrysler can cling on with only 579 sales across the 3 brands to April 2020.
