Why the Perfectly Formed LEXUS LC500 Convertible is still the slickest, sexiest, most beautiful grand tourer since the E-type. It has hardly changed in 7 years and still has the razor-sharp edge of a tastefully designed masterpiece that weas perfection right from the start.

It has some stiff competition, some of which has newer technology, but the LC500 convertible strikes a balance between luxury and practicality. Besides, nothing is sexier than a Japanese V8, and that’s just a matter of fact. Disagree at your peril – we know where you live.

The fiery 351kw 5.0L V8 breathes naturally, getting its feisty voice without being force-fed compressed air. Its 10-speed automatic has a gear for every occasion, switching between them with the delicacy of a Swiss watch.

The roof operation is origami in motion. A deft flick of the concealed centre console button lowers all 4 windows, swings the cover back and unfolds the cloth top at up to a slow canter. It is unusual for the roof compartment to be covered yet completely separated from the boot. It should be law that this car be driven at all times sans roof, although it is one of the few convertibles that looks fabulous whether or not the top is stowed. Nothing is better than a cloth top.

The Mark Levinsen sound system now has wireless CarPlay with concert hall-like responses at all ranges, and is controlled by touch, steering wheel, or voice. A couple of centre console buttons will get little use, but is a vast step up from the abominable LEXUS toggles of the past. The touch screen, previously recessed, now sits forward on the lavishly upholstered dash, where virtual touch buttons can be easily reached.

Whenever I drive the LEXUS LC500 Convertible, I feel like a newly-minted, benevolent, oligarch whose omnipotence is worshipped – a legend in my own mind. Unfortunately when you do anything other than breathe on the accelerator like an asthmatic wasp, the fuel gauge looks more like a rev counter, dropping like a stone.

A bereft wallet is worth it to hear the engine cackling raucously, cracking between changes of cog. I’m in love.

Favourite Things:

  • Acres of butter-soft leather
  • The snarling naturally aspirated V8
  • Lovely ride
  • GT handling
  • LFA-inspired looks
  • Follow-me-home looks

Not So Much

  • SYNC function for climate in the “climate” menu with 1 other function. All other controls including seat heating/cooler, air scarf, heated mirrors and steering wheel, and temperature are in the “comfort” menu”. Some functions have physical buttons.
  • The wheels cost $11,000 each at the front and $12,000 a piece for the rear rims.
  • Boot space is tighter than a fish’s arse.
  • The rear seats can only be used by small earth people (with clean hands and no voices)

Lexus LC500 Convertible Roof Operation is a thing to behold and doing it in traffic may make you look like a complete tool, but it is worth it.

Don’t be tempted to mash your stupidly expensive loafer into the carpet unless you fancy a pit stop for the expensive juice more often than needed. The Lexus LC500 Convertible deserves to be gliding serenely though mountain passes, roof down, with the woodsy aroma of open fires hinting at cosy weekends away.

(watch the LEXUS LC500 Convertible’s mesmerising roof open and close with Alan from gaycarboys.com in our short film #lexus, #lexuslc500convertible, #shorts          )

At $217,157, the LC500 convertible is $14,000 more than the coupe, but worth every single sleepless night, just don’t ding the mags.
