When the Seltos popped out of the womb, it arrived fully formed—pretty, perky, and packed with gadgets and gizmos. Even the base model S (Sport reviewed) features a smart electronic driver display, making a $30K SUV look seriously cool. It’s not the 10.25” LCD screen found in the rest of the range, but a smaller 4.2” version that still mimics a full digital dash. Ingenious, really. That said, you’ve got to wonder why the S is the only one in the lineup without the full display. Surely it wouldn’t cost that much to chuck one in.

We took a jaunt through the country, eventually landing at the farm—full of fun, frippery, and boxes of booze. There were three of us on board, with Max already ensconced in his own cosy, charismatic country cottages.

For anyone doubting that a small SUV could handle three gay blokes on a bucolic adventure, the Seltos proved otherwise—with a grin. Sure, the cargo area was packed to the rafters, but even with a load on, the Seltos was a joy to drive.

NOTE: We boobed! The video features a Seltos Sport not Seltos S as stated

Casper:
A CVT automatic is like putting a rubber band between a couple of thimbles and hoping no one notices. Most of the time, you won’t feel the mushy, disconnected experience—but stick the boot in, and the engine sounds like it’s about to come through the bonnet.
The driver’s seat is comfortable, and all the switches are where you want them to be.
The Seltos ads put young buyers in the driver’s seat. Are they really interested in this entry-level SUV? Kia’s probably right. See the Key Updates HERE

Max:
Our 2.0L engine is the same one used in all FWD Seltos models. The video is labelled as S but is a Sport, also an FWD. The AWD’s 1.6 turbo is much nicer, and without labouring the point, it’s my pick—mainly because of the glossy 8-speed automatic it comes with. As it stands, the CVT-equipped Seltos is perky enough.
It’s a city car, and at that, it’s extremely competent—and sexy with it.
Small SUVs have taken the place of family hatchbacks, and perhaps that’s for the best. There’s tons of space in the back seats and a cargo hold with TARDIS-like capacity for abuse.
It’s cute without being twee.
Finally, I have to say the drive to the farm was massively improved by wireless CarPlay. It’s about time Kia joined the 21st century—this isn’t the 15th, darling.

Ethan:
Warranty, warranty, warranty.
You get a 7-year warranty, and that says a lot about the kind of confidence a manufacturer has in its car.
Bigger interiors make for better long-distance trips, and despite the Seltos being on the small side, the cabin feels surprisingly spacious.
Although the S misses out on the fancy stuff like full LCD driver displays, the thing I really miss is Smart Cruise Control.
Seltos is reasonably fuel efficient, but the 6.9L/100km claim is a bit optimistic. Our mini-trip scored 7.5L/100km—and that included a decent stretch of highway driving.

Alan:
Seltos is a little sweety-pie, but I dislike CVT automatics with the grit of cat-on-mouse grip. The best I can manage is not to hate them—and I don’t hate this one. Make of that what you will.
The drive is a lovely experience. It’s gentle yet cheeky. There’s plenty of perk off the lights, but it runs out of puff when overtaking. So—prior planning, people.
The cabin is quiet, the sound system adequate, and the list of inclusions generous.
I like the Seltos not because it’s cheap, but because it’s generous.

Conclusion:
We drove the GT-line
earlier in the year. It had the 146kW 1.6 turbo and AWD, and we liked it a lot. So it was only fair the Seltos S got the same outing.
It’s the right price, and even with the smaller 110kW engine, it’s a peach.
After all, this isn’t a dick-swinging contest—so 110kW is plenty.
