The 2026 Audi RS 5 Power PHEV is not merely another fast Audi with a stern face and gym-toned thighs. It is a twin-turbo V6 plug-in hybrid performance car with a passport, a production plan, and a rather glamorous long-distance relationship between Neckarsulm and Győr.
Audi’s release is officially about cross-site engine development, which sounds nerdy and complex, and it is. The story is about how the new RS 5 gets its muscle. Neckarsulm leads design and validation of the powertrain, while Audi Hungaria in Győr handles manufacturing and continuous engineering once the pre-production work is done.
This is the first RS model from Audi Sport to use a Power PHEV driveline. The recipe blends a twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor, so the RS 5 can have old-school combustion chutzpah and new-school electrical push without descending to being a boring beige barge.
There is something quite fabulous about performance engineering when it is done properly. Not shouty, not fake, not just a red trim and a badge on a bumper. The new RS 5 sounds like a car built by people with tools and grease, and above all, experience.

Audi says the handover between the German and Hungarian teams is formal, recorded, signed and structured. Though very Teutonic, beneath the paperwork are the engineers who have worked together for years, know each other’s habits, and can make the physical distance disappear.
Audi points to the Power PHEV drivetrain, new quattro with Dynamic Torque Control, and electromechanical torque vectoring at the rear axle.,Tthe RS 5 should be clever about where it sends its power, rather than merely throwing horsepower at a corner and praying for the best.
That is where RS cars live or die. A fast Audi must be brutally competent and sticky and forceful in the way they leave a bend. The earlier Audi RS5 Coupe already showed how neatly Audi could polish speed into something usable. This one adds electricity, more calculation, and greater precision. Electric power is instant.
It also sits in a world where entry-level electric performance has already made silly numbers feel normal. A $60,000 car can be as fast as a $600,000 car, but it is the handling that sorts the sheep from the farmer. The RS e-tron GT proved Audi can make electrons feel expensive and desirable. The new RS 5 has a harder job: keeping petrolheads emotionally juiced up while proving hybrid hardware is not just a Gucci handbag.
For now, Audi says customers can configure and order the new RS 5, with European market availability from the end of June. Australia will have to wait for local detail, but the engineering story gives us something to admire while we sip a pint and browse the pretty pics.
If the car drives with the same confidence as the development story details, this could be one of those rare hybrids that does not feel limp. It might be efficient when required, feral when invited, and beautifully over-engineered in the way only a proper RS Audi can be.
For the hardware obsessed, this is the kind of RS detail that deserves a charged glass and a jolly good “cheers love”.
