ANCAP Rates Electric and Hybrid SUVs but Some Fall Short

ANCAP has announced the latest safety ratings for eight new vehicle models, and all had electric or hybrid powertrains. The safety scores reflect the trend toward sustainable vehicle options, but not all newcomers got good scores, with some falling short in the essential criteria.

Among the standout performers, the Lexus LBX and Volvo EX30 small SUVs each received a five-star safety rating, affirming their brands’ commitment to safety. However, both vehicles showed some areas of concern during destructive crash tests, particularly in the frontal offset test, where potential injury from hard dashboard structures led to penalties.

The Hyundai Santa Fe hybrid, another notable vehicle, also earned a five-star rating. It demonstrated excellent results in both crash protection and collision avoidance, scoring full points for driver protection in side impact and frontal tests. Notably, the hybrid variant of the Santa Fe was rated, while its petrol counterparts are still unrated.

Electric vehicles (EVs) continue to gain traction in the safety rankings, with the Leapmotor C10, Zeekr X, and XPENG G6 all securing five-star ratings. The Leapmotor C10 impressed with perfect scores in side impact and oblique pole tests, while also providing strong protection for child occupants. The Zeekr X, debuting from the new brand, achieved top marks for side impact protection, though a moderate risk to oncoming vehicle occupants was noted in the frontal crash test. Similarly, the XPENG G6 shone in its collision avoidance capabilities and occupant protection, with a well-executed centre airbag that helped protect front seat passengers in side impact tests.

Not all test yield satisfactory results for an OEM.

Although the MG ZS hybrid earned a solid four-star rating, it fell short in the Adult Occupant Protection category, where a minimum of 80% is required. The MG ZS lacked critical features like a centre airbag and had issues with rear seatbelt performance, which hindered its overall safety rating.

The biggest surprise was the Jeep Avenger electric small SUV, which received a disappointing three-star rating. The Avenger struggled across various safety tests, particularly in its protection of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. Despite the growing number of high-performing electric SUVs, the Avenger’s mixed results highlight the importance of prioritising safety in all new models, especially in an era where electric vehicles are becoming more common.

In response to these mixed results, ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg emphasised the importance of balancing safety with sustainability. “There are close to 100 current five-star ANCAP ratings for alternate-powered vehicles, with most manufacturers proving that new models can be both safe and green” she said.

Not all recent arrivals have met the five-star

Ms. Hoorweg also urged Jeep to reassess the Avenger’s safety features. “As an all-new model, it’s disheartening to see the Jeep Avenger fall short on safety. With many electric SUVs entering the market and receiving five-star ANCAP ratings, we know manufacturers can prioritise top-tier safety. We urge Jeep to do so, ensuring buyers don’t have to compromise on safety,” Ms Hoorweg added.

While the latest safety ratings showcase impressive strides in hybrid and electric vehicle safety, the industry still faces challenges. With a growing selection of high-performing models, it’s clear that consumers will continue to demand both top-tier safety and green technologies in the vehicles they drive.

Summary:-

  • Lexus LBX and Volvo EX30 small SUVs uphold their respective brands safety credentials, both achieving five-star safety ratings.
  • Hybrid variants of the new Hyundai Santa Fe large SUV have been awarded with a five-star ANCAP safety rating.
  • The recently introduced Leapmotor C10Zeekr X and XPENG G6 electric SUVs have all earned five-star ANCAP safety ratings.
