ANCAP Safety Boost: MG 7, Haval H7 & MG ZS Score Five Stars

MG and GWM have just landed a massive safety result, with ANCAP handing out five-star ratings like they’re going out of fashion. But look closer—this isn’t just about shiny trophies. It’s a mix of new metal hitting the mark and older models being forced to lift their game.

The standout is the new MG 7. This sleek liftback didn’t just look the part; it survived the lab. It’s packed with the usual tech—autonomous braking that actually spots cyclists and walkers, lane-keep tech that doesn’t just beep but intervenes, and a driver monitor to make sure you’re actually looking at the road. It’s a solid, honest performance that gives MG another five-star badge for the showroom floor.

Then there’s the MG ZS. This one is a bit of a comeback story. Back in late 2024, it was sitting on a four-star rating, which in today’s market is basically a “could do better” report card. MG took the hint. For any ZS built from December 4, 2025, they’ve bolted in a centre airbag. This stops occupants from smashing heads in a side-on hit. That one change pushed the Adult Occupant Protection score to 81%, dragging the car up to the full five stars. It’s proof that manufacturers actually listen when the pressure is on.

The GWM Haval H7 also secured five stars, but not without drama. During the full-width frontal crash test, the driver’s head restraint decided it didn’t want to stay attached and flew off the seat. That’s a massive “no-no.” Credit to GWM, though—they didn’t bury it. They’ve launched a voluntary recall for all H7s sold in Australia. If you own one, or you’re looking at one built before October 15, 2025, you need to get that recall sorted, or your five-star rating doesn’t technically count. ANCAP’s boss, Carla Hoorweg, isn’t playing around. She praised MG for the ZS upgrade but kept the blowtorch on GWM regarding that restraint.
