Why Exhaust Huffers Sob Into Their Zero Carb Beers Over EV Taxes

Oh, honey, please. The absolute state of the Facebook comment section tonight. The local exhaust-huffing manbabies are in an absolute spin, crying into their zero-carb beers because the algorithm served them another plate of pure, unadulterated AI slop. They love a good clickbait headline from some tragic content farm, screeching that EV owners are single-handedly destroying the tarmac. The pure, unhinged drama of it all.

“Oh, the EV drivers need to subsidise the roads!” Please, Mary. Have a Bex and a good lie down. Let’s clear up this little flight of right-wing wankerism right now: there is no magical, sparkling “road pot” where your registration or petrol tax goes to sleep at night. It all goes into one giant pool of government money. And if we’re looking at the facts (which the conservative shills avoid like a sale at a department store), it’s the EV drivers subsidising the fossil fuel users via significant government handouts. But don’t let a little thing like reality ruin a perfectly good, caps-lock tantrum from the frat-bro peanut gallery, babe. Before we take a piss on these fragile, diesel-snorting screamers lying through their poorly capped teeth, let’s glance at some of them-thar hard numbers.

ABOVE: Many EVs

Pull up a chair, because the maths are mathing:

The Carbon Tea (Use-Phase Emissions)

Vehicle / Energy CaseOperational Emissions (Use Phase)
ICE (Petrol/Diesel)~180 to 350 g CO₂/km
EV (Mixed Grid, Australia)~60 to 150 g CO₂/km
EV (Solar Charging)0 g CO₂/km

(The fine print: This assumes a lifetime of 200,000 km in a standard Australian grid context, tracking lifecycle from manufacturing to fuel/energy.)

Lifecycle Carbon Breakdown (t CO₂e / 200,000 km)

  • Small Car: ICE: 30 to 45 vs. EV Mixed Grid: 18 to 30 (Solar Use-Phase drops to 12 to 22)
  • Medium Car: ICE: 40 to 60 vs. EV Mixed Grid: 25 to 40 (Solar Use-Phase drops to 16 to 28)
  • Large SUV: ICE: 60 to 85 vs. EV Mixed Grid: 35 to 55 (Solar Use-Phase drops to 22 to 40)

The ultimate, delicious irony here is that while these professional hand-wringers are throwing tantrums over a Nissan Leaf not paying fuel excise, the multi-billion-dollar mining and energy giants are paying next to nothing in tax compared to a normal person working a 9-to-5. If the anti-EV crowd areally cared about missing money for potholes, they’d stop screaming at Tesla drivers and start looking at BHP, AGL, and EnergyAustralia. These giant entities have been shortchanging the nation by hundreds of billions using clever accounting, asset write-offs, and dodgy corporate structures. Normal people get taxed on every single dollar, but these corporate queens get to play pretend. Over a decade, BHP alone kept a substantial chunk of change that could have funded hospitals, schools, and pristine roads for life. And then we have the crown jewel of the whole corporate grift: The Fossil Fuel Subsidies. This is where every Patagonia-vest-wearing finance-bro should be losing their minds, but they’re too busy staring at crypto charts and sharing minion memes, while scratching their balls and spitting into a bin.

The Annual Corporate Handouts

  • 2023–24: $14.50 Billion ($9.60B Diesel Rebate)
  • 2024–25: $14.90 Billion ($10.20B Diesel Rebate)
  • 2025–26: $16.30 Billion ($10.80B Diesel Rebate)

The “Fuel Tax Credit Scheme” is just a cash refund for diesel. The government is giving the richest companies on earth a steep discount to haul dirt around, and the rebate is so large that it completely wipes out the corporate tax they owe. Look at this 10-year consolidated view of what these companies contribute to the country once the diesel rebate scales are balanced. It is a total joke.

10-Year View: Total Income vs. Net Cash to Government

CITIC Resources$1.85 Billion$0$40 Million-$40 Million-2.16%
Centennial Coal$950 Million$1.24 Million$22 Million-$20.76 Million-2.19%
Sumitomo Coal Mining$820 Million$0$18 Million-$18 Million-2.20%
Peabody Australia$2.31 Billion$0$65 Million-$65 Million-2.81%

The Bottom Line

Seven of the top fifteen major resource operators sit below 0%. They are net receivers of public money. The very same road users complaining about EV drivers are blindly cheering on a system that pays overseas mining conglomerates to take Australian minerals away for free. Next time some absolute dinosaur tries to tell you that EVs aren’t paying their fair share, show them this and watch their last remaining brain cell evaporate.
