World-First Audi Spotify App Needs No Phone, Just A Data Plan

Audi is the first carmaker in the world to offer Spotify’s fully native app directly in the car. It works through the infotainment system itself, so there’s no need to tether a smartphone.

Audi worked with Cariad and Spotify to optimise how Audi Spotify app integration works with Android Automotive OS. Earlier in-car apps were template-based, with standardised layouts and controls. This one has a fuller interface with the familiar Spotify menus and navigation, and it’s optimised for multi-screen displays. Spotify has more than 777 million users worldwide.

Music videos and real-time lyrics are in the car for the first time. Spotify Jam and Spotify DJ come with it too. Jam lets passengers join a shared listening session by scanning a QR code, then add their own songs to the shared queue.

Once the car is moving, the centre MMI display gives up a fair bit. Sign-in and settings are unavailable. Music videos and real-time lyrics are hidden, and their controls are removed from the Now Playing view.

Voice control with “Hey Audi” still works while driving, and so does Spotify DJ. Cars with a front passenger display keep lyrics and music videos on that screen while moving. Park the car and the centre MMI display gets the full feature set back, along with expanded browsing.

Audi Application Store Only, For Now

At first the app is only available through Audi’s Application Store, a central platform for bringing third-party apps into the car. Depending on the model and its equipment and software, those apps are integrated into the infotainment and can use the car’s controls and displays.

Eligible cars are model year 2026 or later on the PPE or PPC platform, which takes in the latest A6 and Q6 e-tron. Q7 and the Q9 get it from their respective market launches.

Spotify already plays in these Audis through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the plug-in Android boxes that run through the CarPlay port already put music videos on the car’s screen. What the native app adds is lyrics and videos on Audi’s own screens without a phone. It’s a great idea, but most of us already run CarPlay or Android Auto off the data plan on our phone. The native app needs a Spotify account, with costs depending on your Spotify plan, and at the very least a subscription to Audi’s eSIM data service for the car. And no, you can’t hotspot your phone to the car and run CarPlay at the same time, because wireless CarPlay already uses the phone’s Wi-Fi. That leaves the question of why Audi bothered.

Who Gets Your Audi Spotify App Data?

Audi doesn’t say what the app collects about what you play, where and when, or who that goes to. With Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, Spotify runs on your phone. A native app runs on the car’s own computer, and that puts the car company in the loop.

GM shared drivers’ trip and braking data with data brokers who sold it on to insurers, and the US Federal Trade Commission banned it from doing so for 5 years in January 2026. A 2024 letter from US Senators Ron Wyden and Ed Markey said Verisk paid Hyundai just over US$1 million for driving data, about 61 cents a car, and paid Honda 26 cents a car for data from 97,000 cars, though Hyundai disputes the letter. Mozilla’s 2023 privacy review found Kia’s and Nissan’s policies allowed them to collect details of your sex life, and it rated cars the worst product category it has ever reviewed for privacy.
