Those who find some of the BMW i EV cars challenging, are going to be further challenged. The exterior is has the familiar narrowing towards the rear end, providing a small window along the cargo hold. The front end has the kidney grille, which has been elongated, M4 style.
Electric all-wheel-drive and near-actuator wheel slip limitation
The fancy AWD system powers either the back wheels for light grip or cruising, or all wheels when full grip is needed.
The xDrive50 posts impressive acceleration times with 0 to 100km/h achieved in just 4.6 seconds, while the xDrive40 hits 100km/h from rest in 6.1 seconds.

High-voltage battery with the latest battery cell technology
iX features comes with the latest 5th generation BMW eDrive that comes with denser batteries of some 40% up on the 2020 BMW i3.
The BMW iX xDrive50 gets a 112kWh battery, and the iX xDrive40 slightly lower, at 77kWh.
Flexible fast charging charging of 200kW (iX xDrive50) or 150kW (iX xDrive40) bring the battery from 10 to 80% in just 35 minutes on xDrive50 or 31 minutes in the iX xDrive40. That’s still quite a wait compared to petrol engines, so plan to charge while you shop.
If you’re in a rush you can grab 150 (iX xDrive50) or 95 kilometres (iX xDrive40) in 10 minutes.
As with all EVs, recharging also takes place via regenerative braking.
Premiere of new generation BMW iDrive and operating software
The BMW iX also sees the debut of the latest generation of iDrive, with Operating System 8.
It uses the new BMW Curved Display along with a voice operated Personal Assistant. If you’ve never been able to get one to work, this one has an extensive upgrade.
New ‘My Modes’ personalisation fully customises the iX to the owner’s tastes and needs.
Navigation uses BMW’s cloud-based system and Maps, along with Augmented Reality Video in the control display. This is an almost Star Trek-like interface that will take the drive to the next level. It is going to have to be a huge improvement on previous attempts if it is to be useful. The BMW iX uses onboard 5G for high speed data transmission.
