Chery Stockman Ute Goes to Premcar for Australian Validation

Chery has handed its first ute to Premcar, the Melbourne engineering firm behind the Nissan Warrior utes, for local testing and validation before the Chery Stockman goes on sale late this year.

So far, there is no price, no local specification and no launch date beyond the last quarter of 2026. The Chery Stockman will be assessed on Australian roads by a company that has spent 30 years doing exactly that work for other people’s cars.

Who Premcar Is

Premcar was set up by Britain’s Prodrive in 1996 and turns 30 this year. It has had a hand in more than 200,000 new cars and 55,000 engines, and since 2019 it has built the Warrior versions of the Nissan Navara and Patrol, more than 12,700 of them, re-engineered in Victoria and covered by Nissan’s own warranty. A manufacturer does not put its warranty behind another company’s suspension work unless it trusts the engineering.

Bernie Quinn, Premcar’s chief executive, was careful about the wording. “Chery has created very specific attributes for the Stockman’s ride and handling and we are very pleased to help them test and validate their work in a variety of Australian conditions.”

Validation Is Not the Same as Tuning

This is so terribly important to be be clear about, because the two get conflated every time a brand announces an Australian program. Premcar is testing and validating a tune Chery has already done. It is not being handed a blank sheet and told to make the car ride in an Australian way, the way Hyundai and Kia hand their local teams a car and let them rewrite the damper and spring rates. The program will “assess Chery’s ride and handling tuning”, which is a check rather than a redesign.

That is not a criticism, just something to keep in mind when buying. A thorough validation program on corrugations, on coarse-chip country roads and at highway speed with a load in the tub will find what a Chinese proving ground cannot, and a company with Premcar’s record will not sign off on a car that crashes over a cattle grid. Whether Chery then acts on what it hears is another matter, but is not out of the question.

The Chery Stockman Details Are Scant, But Here is What we Know

Stockman was detailed with a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel plug-in hybrid making a combined 350kW and 800Nm, with up to 100km of electric-only driving, 3,500kg of braked towing and at least 247mm of ground clearance. It is 5,450mm long on a 3,250mm wheelbase, it has selectable front, centre and rear diff locks, and it is shod with all-terrain tyres out of the box. Like BYD Shark 6 and the other Chinese utes, Ranger and HiLux look a bit last week by comparison.

Chinese utes have not been caught short on outputs. The ute needs to ride, steer and behave itself when the road stops being smooth, and it is the one area where a buyer who tows a boat every second weekend will notice a difference inside five minutes. GWM went the other way and threw a new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel at the problem. Chery has gone looking for engineers instead, so is the diesel PHEV genius or folly? It is the only one on the market so that question will be answered after launch.

What the Chery Stockman Still Has to Prove

The Chinese ute wave began in a segment the conservative governments told us couldn’t modernise beyond Diesel Japanese and US offerings. Not wanting to repeat the disaster that is Kia Tasman, Chery is bringing the Stockman in looking handsome, with a modern cabin, and a classy cabin. The ute market already has plenty of cheap capability in it, from a company that is busy launching sub-brands at the same time. Lucas Harris, Chery Motor Australia’s chief operating officer, framed it as investing locally to build cars for local drivers.

With Premcar’s name is on it, the Warrior utes are on the road and can be driven by anyone, and if the Chery Stockman turns up in late 2026 riding like a wheelbarrow then a reputation built over 30 years takes the hit alongside Chery’s. That is a real incentive and it is more than most launch announcements offer. Pricing and Australian specification will make or break it, and it has BYD’s Shark 6 to better.
