Ford Australia and Triple Eight Race Engineering co-engineered the Mustang Dark Horse T8-Spec pack. Pirelli semi-slick tyres, revised springs, a new roll bar, retuned suspension, and a shortened steering rack, with a run of 250 cars.
Mustang Dark Horse T8-Spec is a factory option on Mustang, developed with the most successful team in Supercars Championship history. See our earlier story on the T8-Spec pack for more detail.
Tom Dohrmann, Supervisor of Special Vehicles Engineering at Ford Australia, listed the hardware. “The Pirellis are basically a semi-slick, track-biased tyre. Around that, we’ve made changes to the springs, the roll bar, the ride suspension and the steering rack. It’s a whole package that comes together for a big uplift in handling performance.”
What Triple Eight Changed on Mustang Dark Horse T8-Spec
The tyre is a Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS, 305/30 ZR19 at the rear. The steering rack was shortened. Brembo brakes with blue calipers, a large rear wing, and a bonnet vent complete the visual side of the pack.

Jamie Whincup, a 7-time Supercars champion, put the priority order plainly. “At the end of the day, the tyre is the only thing that touches the ground. You can have the best car and the best driver, but if you’ve got the wrong tyres, it’s not going to be quick.” On the rest, he said suspension is what keeps the tyre on the ground, and called it a critical part over bumps and under braking.
Whincup rated the starting point as already sorted. “It’s already a nicely balanced car. It not only handles well, but it gives great feedback to the driver, so they enjoy the experience. We wanted to help take that to the next level with T8-Spec.” Whincup ran a Mustang Dark Horse in Queensland and fed his findings back to Ford.
Who Did What
James Holloway of Ford Special Vehicles Engineering said it wasn’t a branding exercise, and that Jamie Whincup and Mark Dutton were in the meetings with Ford, “giving their views on what this could be and what it shouldn’t be”.
Whincup calls Triple Eight “an engineering business that goes racing”.
“We’ve recently celebrated our 20-year history as Triple Eight Race Engineering Australia. We like to think we know a little bit about setting up a race car.” He added that 20 years of going round and round in circles taught the team what makes a car handle well on a racetrack and stay balanced overall.
Dohrmann was blunt about what Ford wanted to avoid. “We didn’t want to be cynical or seem to be offering up something like a sticker pack. There had to be real content in the vehicle that meant something to people who know about cars. That’s what really drove our decisions.” Ford has developed cars locally for more than 60 years, and the last manual V8 Mustang we drove is reviewed here.
Ordering Rules and the 250-Car Run
Stock is limited to 250 cars. The pack can only be added to a 2026.00MY 6-speed manual Mustang Dark Horse, and 3 factory options come standard. Those are the Recaro Sports Seats Pack, the Mustang Dark Horse Appearance Pack, and ‘Avalanche’ Prestige Paint, a colour exclusive to T8-Spec. These will be a manual-only transmission model.
Mustang Dark Horse T8-Spec isn’t signed off yet. Triple Eight will be at Ford’s You Yangs Proving Ground near Geelong over the next couple of months, finishing the steering and handling calibration alongside Ford’s engineers and signing the vehicle off. “We had an integral part in the development of the car, and we can’t wait for it to hit the road in customers’ hands,” Whincup said. Ford’s other recent local work includes the Everest Wildtrak.
