GWM Hits 200,000 Sales Milestone in Australia After 16 Years

GWM Australia has officially clocked up 200,000 sales, proving it’s no longer the new kid on the block but a serious contender in the Aussie car market.

Since its local debut in 2009, GWM has transformed from a niche import to a mainstay, now sitting 7th on the VFACTS leaderboard year-to-date. Not bad for a brand once written off as a curiosity among Toyota HiLuxes and Ford Rangers.

The secret sauce? A line-up that covers all bases. The stylish Haval SUV range, the hard-working Cannon and Cannon Alpha utes, the premium Tank off-roaders, and the funky fully electric ORA. Throw in hybrids and plug-in hybrids for the eco-curious, while keeping petrol engines for the traditionalists, and you’ve got a portfolio broad enough to keep almost everyone happy.

Australia has become one of GWM’s most important global growth hubs. Local buyers have embraced the brand’s mix of value and modern tech, and with ownership benefits like long warranties, the appeal is clear. Add to that the brand’s investment in local testing at the Lang Lang Proving Ground, and it’s obvious GWM is serious about building cars to suit our roads, not just our wallets. This makes up for the false Great Wall Motors start where the sub-par product sent buyers running.

Head of Marketing & Communications Steve Maciver says the milestone is thanks to “every GWM customer who has placed their trust in our brand.” From the very first GWM rolling onto Aussie shores to the 200,000th vehicle handed over, it’s been a journey of grit, growth, and a touch of glamour.

And with momentum showing no signs of slowing, it feels safe to say the next milestone might be closer than anyone expects — watch this space.
