GWM Australia is clearing the decks of its 2025 build stock this March by removing the price premium usually attached to its all-wheel-drive H6 variants. In a move designed to shift units before the 2026 models take over, the brand is offering a complimentary AWD upgrade on the H6 Ultra Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), representing a significant saving of $3,500. For anyone who has ever felt the front wheels of an SUV spin on a wet intersection or struggle for traction on a gravel driveway, this represents a major upgrade in vehicle dynamics for no extra outlay.
Under this campaign, the H6 Ultra AWD Hybrid is priced at $39,990 driveaway, while the H6 Ultra AWD PHEV sits at $43,990 driveaway. By matching these to the front-wheel-drive price points, GWM is effectively removing the financial hurdle that often forces families into less capable 2WD alternatives.
The Massive Advantage of AWD
The move to All-Wheel Drive (AWD) is far more than a badge on the tailgate; it fundamentally changes how the H6 handles Australian roads. A front-wheel-drive SUV, particularly one with the high instantaneous torque of a hybrid motor, can often struggle to put power down. This results in “scuffing” or loss of traction when accelerating away from a stop on damp surfaces or greasy city streets.
By opting for the AWD model, drivers gain a massive advantage in stability and “sure-footedness.” The system provides a level of confidence that FWD simply cannot match, especially when cornering or navigating loose surfaces. In heavy rain, the car feels more planted, reducing the likelihood of understeer and ensuring that the vehicle stays exactly where you point it. For families who travel on regional roads or tackle the occasional unsealed track, the extra grip provides a vital safety net.

Tech Breakdown: The Hi4 System
The hardware doing the heavy lifting here is GWM’s Hi4 intelligent all-wheel-drive system. While older, traditional AWD systems relied on heavy mechanical linkages that increased fuel consumption, the Hi4 system uses electric motors across both the front and rear axles. This allows for lightning-fast torque distribution that is managed electronically in real time.
The system is constantly “thinking,” evaluating road conditions and driver input to decide exactly how much power each wheel needs. It seamlessly engages all-wheel drive when you need that extra bite for performance or safety, then reverts to two-wheel drive during steady highway cruising to maintain efficiency. This intelligent management ensures that the H6 Hybrid and PHEV don’t sacrifice their fuel-sipping credentials just to give you better grip.
We loved the H6 PHEV for its value and ease of use. Plugging in daily allows economy lower than even the minimum publiched figures, a unicorn in the auto industry. Usually figures are had by throwing darts on a board.
Clearing the 2025 Stock
The timing of this offer is no coincidence. GWM moved over 13,000 H6 units in 2025, and with 2026 sales already showing a 6.1% year-on-year increase, the brand is looking to maintain that momentum by clearing out remaining 2025-plate stock.
While last year’s model year might put some off, the H6 is a large SUV for such a small price. One might also ask why there are still MY25 H6 models to deliver, but it still means a bargain for keen shoppers.
Steve Maciver, GWM Australia’s Head of Marketing, noted that the campaign is designed to give customers the confidence of AWD while removing the traditional price barrier between drivetrains. It is a pragmatic move to ensure the H6 remains a dominant player in the crowded mid-size SUV segment. To take advantage of the $3,500 saving, buyers need to take delivery of an eligible 2025 build model by March 31, 2026.
