Boxy Haval H7 Starts at $45,990 With AWD on Every Grade

GWM’s Haval H7 starts at $45,990 drive-away, and every one of its 4 grades drives all 4 wheels.

Haval H7 Lux Hybrid gets that $45,990 as a launch price, $1,000 under its $46,990 list. The Lux PHEV gets the same cut, from $50,990 to $49,990. Vanta prices stay put at $49,990 for the Hybrid and $53,990 for the PHEV. Every price is drive-away as seen on GWM’s website.

GWM opened orders after what it calls “record levels of pre-launch interest”, which in our earlier story added up to 1,500 expressions of interest before the first cars reached dealers. Haval H7 went on public display when GWM took it to Everything Electric.

It’s a boxy 5-seat medium SUV, and GWM wants it to help push the company into the top 5 brands in the market. There are 130 dealers nationally to sell it through.

In the self-charging Hybrid (a term we hate using). Self charging might lead people to think it is an EV that charges itself, as opposed to a hybrid working normally. A 130kW/260Nm rear motor brings combined output to 182kW/670Nm, with a 0-100km/h in 7.0 seconds and economy of 7.0L/100km.

The PHEV gets a more powerful 150kW/260Nm rear motor and a 33.7kWh LFP battery, for 320kW/670Nm combined and 0-100km/h in very frisky 4.9 seconds. It’s good for EV-only range of 137km WLTP and a total of 844km WLTP. Used as a PHEV should be used, economy is 0.9L/100km and 242Wh/km. DC charging from 30% to 80% takes 19 minutes through a CCS2 plug, and V2L supplies up to 6kW. That means you can power your external devices at a campsite or building job.

Both get a locking rear differential and a full-size spare.

What Lux and Vanta Get

Lux is far from a stripper. The 15.6in screen runs GWM’s Coffee OS with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the 360° camera takes the guesswork out of tight car parks. There’s a front centre airbag too, so front occupants don’t clash heads in a side impact.

Vanta is where the comfort goes, with heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a head-up display. Paint is $595 extra unless you choose Hamilton White, and a Vanta in Velvet Black or Emerald Green can have an Apricot cabin.

Haval H6, H6GT, and Now the H7

GWM pitches its Haval H6 as the contemporary family SUV and the H6GT as the coupe-styled one. Haval H7 is the rugged, boxy one of the 3. See our Haval H6 Ultra 2WD HEV review for more on the H6.
