A good HUD (head up display) is one of the handiest modern gadgets a car can have. Other than Tesla who seems to think Driver Displays aren’t really needed, most OEMs are installing dazzling driver instrument panels. Taking that a step further, an HUD displays data onto the windscreen in the driver’s line of sight. Cheaper systems use a flick up panel that rises inelegantly from the dash, but that is sub-par, and not at all up to snuff.

We’ve been inundated with several emails over the years asking how an HUD works, and why theirs isn’t playing ball. Although most current generation models have the HUD menus in the same place, automotive history is littered with a litany of loosely interpreted locations for controls.

ABOVE: Head Up Display (HUD)

There are a few things to check.

Your user manual is your friend, but if that doesn’t enlighten you sufficiently, find the DISPLAY menu.

Look for head Up Display, or HUD options.

(NOTE: there may be a button on the lower left side of the dash instead.)

The menu will either be in the infotainment screen or the driver’s multi-function display.

Once found, make sure the HUD is turned on and that the brightness is turned up. Adjust the height of the HUD to make sure you haven’t set your seat too high to be able to see the data.

If all that is tickety boo, make sure your sunglasses haven’t got a polarised lense. They can often interfere with LCD displays, and an HUD is just an LCD display projected onto the windscreen.
