Hyundai NEXO Scores Five-Star Euro NCAP Safety Rating

Hyundai has done it again. The all-new Hyundai NEXO has nailed a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, proving that hydrogen power can be both clean and seriously clever when it comes to keeping people safe.

As Hyundai’s next-generation hydrogen fuel-cell electric SUV, NEXO emits nothing but water vapour, yet delivers the kind of safety credentials usually reserved for the very best in the business. It follows in the confident footsteps of IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 and IONIQ 9, keeping Hyundai’s five-star safety streak very much alive.

That’s not to say everything coming out of the Hyundai Group design studios lately has been universally loved. Styling across the group feels like it’s taken a confident turn down Bizarre Street, past restrained good taste and into architectural experimentation. Some models are stunning, others look like they were penned after a very long lunch. Thankfully, even when the design gets weird, the engineering and safety teams are still wearing sensible shoes.

Euro NCAP handed the NEXO outstanding scores across all major categories, including 90 percent for Adult Occupant Protection and 85 percent for Child Occupant Protection. In frontal offset testing the cabin stayed rock solid, protecting knees, femurs and all critical body areas for both driver and passenger. Side impacts earned maximum points, with the centre airbag stepping in to protect occupants in far-side crashes. Rear impacts were equally impressive, with top marks for whiplash protection in both front and rear seats.

Kids were very well looked after too. Six- and ten-year-old dummies scored maximum points in frontal and side impact tests, showing strong protection across all critical areas. Practical touches like clear front passenger airbag status, broad child-seat compatibility, and thoughtful restraint design round out the family-friendly brief.

Euro NCAP also highlighted NEXO’s advanced safety tech, including eCall, post-crash secondary impact braking, and even verified that doors and windows remain operable if the car ends up underwater. Because nothing says confidence like planning for the worst and hoping for the best.

This result also has a bit of history behind it. The original NEXO was the first fuel-cell electric vehicle ever tested by Euro NCAP back in 2018, and it scored five stars then too. The new model simply raises the bar higher, blending hydrogen innovation with next-level crash protection.

Think of it as the well-dressed, quietly confident gay guy at the party. Immaculate manners, sharp tailoring, and absolutely unshakeable when things get messy. Hyundai’s message is clear: zero emissions does not mean zero substance.
