Jeep’s Electric Avenger Arrives September $4000 cheaper

Jeep is finally making a move into the electric vehicle market with the all-new, fully electric Jeep Avenger, arriving at Australian dealerships this September. Now priced from $49,990 MSRP, the $4,000 reduction signals movement in the EV market, and the effect cheaper Chinese cars have had on the landscape. If Jeep Avenger is to compete, it had to arrive cheaper.

This latest addition to the Jeep lineup has won awards, including European Car of the Year 2023 and the title of World’s Best Family SUV in the Women’s World Car of the Year Awards, and has always been a gay favourite.

Small But Clever

Designed from the ground up as an electric vehicle, the Jeep Avenger brings Jeep’s DNA into a compact SUV form. At 4.08 metres long, it’s the most minute Jeep in the range, making it perfect for threading through tight city streets. The Avenger’s small size is still stuffed with all the Jeep gear. Handy 360-degree plastic cladding offers “replaceable” full-body protection, but 200 mm ground clearance means off-roading requires extra care.

Avenger’s well laid out interior comfortably seats five and there are clever storage solutions with 34 litres of space for smaller everyday items. The versatile rear cargo area suits weekend getaways to daily commutes and isn’t too precious about getting dirty.

Green Power

Under the bonnet—or rather beneath the floor—the Avenger’s all-electric powertrain is sufficient. Range is around 396 km (WLTP), and fast charging adds 30 km of range in 3 minutes. A full charge from 20% to 80% takes approximately 24 minutes on a maximum 100kW DC charger, slightly disappointing. We’d like to have seen that closer to 200kw DC.

Almost all public charging facilities purchase energy from renewable sources, so despite doubters, EVs are as green as they can be for now. Future power supplies will be 100% renewable and it will happen sooner than predicted.

Power figures of 115kW and 260Nm coupled with lightweight design and low drag coefficient of 0.33 means the drive experience should be more than just numbers. The 54kWh battery is a balance between weight, range, charging time, and cost, but will it pay off?

Safety and Technology

IN order to keep up with the pack (ADAS) safety features list Blind Spot Monitoring and Autonomous Emergency Braking among other attributes. Data and menus come via a 10.25-inch infotainment screen and a digital driver display which is fast becoming industry standard.

A New Era for Jeep

This is a brave move for a brand with brawny petrol and diesel ancestors, but is an essential one if Jeep is to remain on buyer’s lists. There is still the whiff of classic Jeep, but the electric drive, and modern tech, gives Avenger the ability to be more than just an SUV. Stellantis is slowly but surely electrifying its many brands but had better get a wriggle on if it is going to stay on trend. Stellantis’ Citroen, DS, Dodge are among the defunct nameplates in the OZ market, so a reasonably priced, eco-friendly Jeep is essential.

We have yet to see a Stellantis brand with 350kw charging and long battery range, and buyers will be comparing all features and prices across the board. It was once the Europeans the world looked to for technical genius, and while the Netherlands-based automaker has know-how from the many brands hoovered up over time, they, like the rest of us, watch as the world’s automotive lead gradually moves from Europe, the USA and Japan, to China.
