As you roll down the road in a serene capsule of Zen elegance, Kia’s EV6 feels a little like a day at a spa.

See our launch review with brochure and specification HERE:

The things we want from an EV are little different from that of a vehicle with a chunk of dinosaur-burning cast iron up front, but not all EVs are the same. Regardless of the size of the battery, it is the amount of time you have to spend tethered to a power umbilical that matters. It makes all the difference when you’re out on the open road.

Charging has been the hot issue, and the subject of much anti-EV codswallop. EV6 can gobble down the fastest charging available, something only 4 brands can claim: Kia, Hyundai, Genesis, and Porsche.

Next, we considered looks: and coming in a close second was Hyundai’s IONIQ 5, built on the same platform and running gear as the EV6. On the list was Nissan’s Z, the Jaguar F-Type, LEXUS LC500 Convertible and Alfa’s Giulia sedan. New Peugeot 308, Volvo C40, Subaru BRZ, Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Citroen C4, and Land Rover 90 were also in consideration. Whilst there were one or two mainstream cars got a gong, most were like stirring a bucket of wall-paper paste; bland, uninspiring and dreary.

EV6’s looks are a mélange of subtle yet succinct lines, curves and crevices. The rear end is one that came in for most comment but even if you don’t like it, no one can deny the daring styling catches an eye.

The Cabin:

It seems that an EV designed from the ground up, has a knack for taking advantage of space in a way no ICE car can. An underfloor battery makes surface higher inside that it would otherwise be, but it makes for an interior that feels far more spacious than it really is.

There is oodles of knee space in the back, but the front seats sit snuggly with the floor, so those in the pauper pews will plead with punters in the good seats. A little height makes all the difference, right.

The big curved screen can also be seen in Mercedes and BMW, and now it would seem, in humble Kias. It comes with a head up display projected on the windscreen, and once you’ve lived with this techy abundance, going back to dials for the tacho and speedo feels like camping.

To go with the snazzy cabin ambience is a climate system that also turns the steering wheel heating, and seat heating and cooling on and off. In a stroke of genius, clever old EV6 also seals the cabin when it detects high pollution such as seen in our very many tunnels.

The Drive:

Drive modes give the 168kw/350Nm motor the ability to go from calm and cosy to slightly crazed in 3 easy steps. When the EV6 GT arrives, all hell breaks loose.

There is lovely light steering, and ride tuned to be firm but fair. Directional changes are swift, and while there is little of that nasty body roll to make travelers sick, and car weighing more than 2,000kg has a tough time hiding the heft in corners. Luckily, the low centre of gravity means the lateral shifts are kept under control by a careful tyre/damper setup.

Why is the EV6 my Favourite care?

Gay buyers yearn for the rare and unusual. Of late, EVs have become flavour of the month, and while it may seem like Tesla is the electric car of choice, every man and his dog has one. I dislike Model 3 instrumentation and it feels weird for the sake of it. EV6 feels like a regular car, albeit a quiet and sexy one.

It is the one I have most enjoyed this year.
