The 2025 MG4 RWD and AWD EVs are enjoying one last lap of honour before MG’s Australian line-up takes a new turn. And yes, she’s still under $40K — but only just, and not for long.
Right now, the MG4 comes in three battery sizes — 51 kWh, 64 kWh, and 77 kWh — with the entry-level 51 kWh RWD slipping in under that magic $40K drive-away mark. It’s one of the few affordable EVs offering rear-biased handling, something usually reserved for pricier toys. For those who care about more than just getting from A to B, it’s an unusual combination of driving engagement and everyday usability.
But the fun won’t last forever. MG Motor Australia has confirmed a strategy shift for 2026. Out go the current budget-friendly RWD and AWD options. In come front-wheel drive city-focused models with smaller 43 kWh and 54 kWh batteries — fine for urban life, less thrilling for those who enjoy a winding back road. The RWD and AWD layouts will survive, but only in 64 kWh form, and at a noticeably higher price point.

Peter Ciao, MG’s Australian CEO, says the move is about “balancing needs and costs” — a polite way of saying that affordable, rear-drive EVs are becoming an endangered species. MG clearly sees an opportunity in the commuter market, but for buyers who want something a little friskier, this is the moment to pounce.
The MG4 has never been a halo car, but it has become something of a quiet hero for budget-conscious drivers who still care about how their car feels on the road. Its playful handling and relatively long range make it a genuine alternative to more expensive EVs.
When the 2026 models arrive, the choice will be simpler but more expensive. That means the 2025 MG4 — particularly the sub-$40K RWD variant — will likely become a bit of a cult car for those in the know. If you’ve been curious, now’s the time to take one for a spin, before she swaps her dancing shoes for sensible commuter flats.
