Meet Escape PHEV, Ford's 1st Australian EV

Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is now available in Australia.

Better late than never, Escape PHEV is Ford’s Australian EV. Escape launched in late 2020, with the 2022 PHEV rounding out the Escape mid-size SUV range.

Well behind many other car makers, Ford’s first step heralds the beginning of an era which will see five electrified vehicles by the end of 2024.

As with all PHEVs, Escape PHEV gives its owners the flexibility of the road-trip range of an internal combustion engine, with an electric powertrain for around town.

The system uses a 2.5L four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, an electric motor, and a generator with a 14.4kWh lithium-ion battery. The total system output is 167kW of power, with a claimed economy of 1.5L/100km and 33g/km of CO2. Escape PHEV promises a pure EV range of around of 50 kilometres.

Some may ask why anyone would bother a mere 50KM worth, but most cars don’t travel further than 50km a day commuting. If you’re prepared to spend your life plugging the thing in every time the wheels stop moving, you might never need to call on the petrol engine for anything more than a boost.

The battery is charged from a port on the front passenger’s side, but is also topped up using regenerative charging that stores energy normally lost when braking.

You can choose from four different modes: EV Auto, EV Now, EV Later and EV Charge.

In EV Now mode, Pure EV mode is used, and when the battery runs out, Escape PHEV automatically revert to EV Auto mode. The petrol engine is then helped with the occassional electric motor assistance.

Escape PHEV comes with a five-year, unlimited kilometre factory warranty. The electric motor and high-voltage system parts, including the battery, have an eight-year/160,000km warranty.

Escape PHEV eligible owners can take advantage of all the Ford service benefits on offer, such as a Service Loan Car, Auto Club Membership including National Roadside Assistance as well as Sat Nav Map Updates. With service intervals every 15,000 km/12 months, eligible Escape PHEV owners will pay a maximum of $299³ per A & B scheduled services for the first four services up to 4 years/60,000km (whichever comes first).
