Meet the £20million Rolls Royce Boat Tail Convertible

Posh Rolls Royce Just Got Posher

Once upon a time, Mulliner Park Ward and other such esteemed coachbuilders, hand built the coachwork for automakers like Rolls Royce. Rolls Royce supplied the oily bits, wheels, and the fancy schmancy grille, and the rest was wrought by muscled navvies with big hammers.

The roof, doors, seats and roof, all crafted by hand, were fitted in the craftsman’s workshops. It made a posh car more like a tailored suit than a jumper out of a plastic bag.

Buyers could specify as much as their wallet could stand, shoehorning with all manner of luxury fitments. Some Rollers were even kitted out to cross roadless continents. We have roads now, and they are good, for the most part, unless you live in Sydney, but I digress.

Just as the craftsman curated cars, they also prepared Pullman’s and lined up luxury luggage makers. The common theme was the kind of travel we now look back on as the halcyon days of touring.

Rolls Royce is expanding their “bespoke” profile by bringing back the uber luxury of the coachbuilt conveyance.

The very first commission was unveiled to the gasps of the world press. Well, they sent me a press release and I choked on my G&T. Same thing really.

Rolls Royce Boss, Torsten Müller-Ötvös said, “Today marks a seminal moment for the House of Rolls-Royce. We are proud to unveil Rolls-Royce Boat Tail to the world, and with it, the confirmation of coachbuilding as a permanent fixture within our future portfolio.”

it started in 2017 with the equally polarising Sweptail. The project, “was instantly proclaimed as one of the finest intercontinental tourers in history.” There was still a market for such unrivalled excess, and modern coachbuild was born, or more accurately, classic coachbuild was reborn.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The £20million Boat tail is a somewhat challenging look, obviously tailored to its owner’s tastes and whims. Alex Innes is the Head of Rolls-Royce Coachbuild Design, and his department has distilled every possible skill into the ability to meet the desires that come with great success.

Unbelievably, the Boat Tail is, in fact, a vey posh picnic set. The “hosting suite” is a series of silently superb motors, gadgets and gizmos to carry and serve the very best food and drink. Covers raise, and a brolly whirs into place above picnic tables that swing out. Everything is bespoke. Christoffel silver sits beside Rolls Royce monogrammed crystal glassware. How and cold food, chilled champers, and all manner drinks can be enjoyed, all while listening to the dulcet tones of the bespoke audio system.

Like the rest of the Boat Tail, the audio system takes advantage of the coachbuilt individuality by using parts of the body as resonance chambers.

Like everything else about the Rolls Royce “bespoke” ethos, if you have the money, your imagination need know no limits. You may not want to cross the world, but you might want to cross the common for a posh picnic.
