The new policy is part of a $490 million Electric Vehicle Strategy announced in Sydney recently. The joint statement by Treasurer Dominic Perrottet, Minister for Energy and Environment Matt Kean, and Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance, Is set to be a game changer.

It makes the first 25,000 EVs more affordable, and will expedite the rollout out of the one thing that most people state as their objection to EV ownership, charging.

The government will focus on the rollout of fast-charge networks in high-density residential areas and destination chargers at commuter hubs.

This is a vital and welcome initiative from the NSW Government to support the continued roll-out of electric vehicles,” said MG Motor Australia and New Zealand CEO, Peter Ciao.

MG Australia was understandably chuffed by the news which makes the cheapest EV in Australia, even cheaper. Their MG ZS EV price will drop to around $39,670 t from September 1, but only for eligible NSW residents

MG claims their MG ZS EV is not only the greatest value EV, and has a 5 star ANCAP rating, but is now more attractive to private and fleet buyers alike.

The MG has a 44.5kWh battery with regenerative braking and drive modes.  This gives the ZS EV an alleged  real-world range of 263km*.

MG is arguably the fastest growing brand in Australia which now dominates the entry level sectors. It is also in pride of place to blitz the EV segment too.

About the subsidy

Eschewing the Victorian EV tax, the NSW government has announced a $490 million incentive instead. It is a part of the part of its “Net Zero Plan”. The “Electric Vehicle Strategy” is the largest EV incentive program Australia has seen so far..

Their plan is based on 4 pillars:

  • Overcoming the hurdles to electric vehicle rollout.
  • Increase the economic and public health benefits from increasing EV ownership
  • In line with the NSW “net zero emissions by 2050” aim.
  • It will adopt a fair and sustainable revenue model to build and operate the road network into the future

Which vehicles will be covered?

The NSW Electric Vehicle Strategy mainly provides support for battery and hydrogen fuel cell EVs with zero emissions, and can be powered by 100% renewables (such as Chargefox).

Who is eligible?

The NSW Government will provide rebates of $3000 on the purchase of the first 25,000 EVs sold in New South Wales from 1 September 2021. Rebates will only be available for cars retailing under $68,750, making sure the rebate is going to the cars more people can afford.
