One Off Ferrari SP-8 Comissioned By a Super Rich Buyer

The super-rich can have a Ferrari One-Off series, and the latest is Ferrari’s SP-8.

Ferrari’s Special Projects programme sees this specially commissioned car designed by the Flavio Manzoni-headed Ferrari Styling Centre. The mid-rear-engined V8 open air motoring mega machine is based on the F8 Spider.

The SP-8 uses the 3.9-litre V8 twin-turbo engine, winner of Engine of the Year (IEOTY) 4 years on the trot.  8 is a lucky number for the Chinese, so the Taiwanese client sees the number 8 lucky, bringing success, good fortune and personal achievement.

The SP-8’s has no roof, requiring extensive refining of its aerodynamics using CFD simulations, wind tunnel testing and track testing to ensure it is as slippery and quiet as the car from which was spawned.

SP-8’s unpainted carbon-fibre front continues along to the tail, creating a two-tone effect. With no retractable hard top, designers were able to completely redo the tail section. A cast aluminium grille, made from a single, 3D-printed mould stretches across the face.

SP-8 headlights differ from the donor car too. They have special masks and lenses, while the rear lights are inspired by the Roma with specific lenses. The windscreen and tailpipes were given the same treatment as the 296 GTB’s, and unique wheel rims are done in an equally unique matte Grigio NART. 

The wheels are exclusive to this particular car inspired by classic rims used on Ferrari Sports Prototypes, and the F40. The main aim is to make them lighter, being pretty is a mere consequence.

The cabin has a console that houses the F1 gearbox commands, featured in Ferraris since the SF90 Stradale. This required a modified shift-gate for this commission, meaning nothing was too much trouble for a buyer with endless cash to burn. Seats have laser-etched Navy Blue Alcantara with gradient effect cloth, and carpets in specific twill fabric with an iridescent effect.

Matte Argento Micalizzato colour was mixed specifically for the SP-8 to compliment the glossy iridescent Blue Sandstone carbon-fibre section.

The SP-8 will be on display from the morning of the 24th of October at the Mugello Circuit until the end of the Finali Mondiali Ferrari 2023. Thereafter, it will be displayed at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello from November 16, 2023 until March 2024.
