PEUGEOT 408 GT Premium Fastback Hybrid to Replace PHEV Model

PEUGEOT is replacing the slow selling 408 GT PHEV with 408 GT Premium Fastback Hybrid. Slated for delivery from Q1 2025, the new model and driveline comes in at $57,990, $10,000 cheaper than the PHEV.

As the French car maker transitions to an electrified future, it is discovering an EU success may not work elsewhere y. Stellantis has been treading water since the amalgamation of Fiat-Chrysler, and Peugeot-Citroen and not all of its brands will survive. Peugeot’s Australian importer, Inchcape, recently axed Citroën, and did not take up the DS mantle.

The 408 PHEV is a deeply beautiful car, stunning inside and out, but it must compete in a tight market. 20 new models have hit the Australian showrooms recently, with more to come next year. Chinese brands have come on board with product that strikes a chord with the market, and two of those brands are now in the top ten.

The automotive landscape changing up gears and is only a cog or two away from overdrive.

Power, Performance, and Efficiency

This new hybrid variant of the 408 is intended to give the buyer a balance between efficiency and price, but is a combined figure of 115.6kw enough to give buyers the performance 408 deserves?

Reducing the price will help, but if Peugeot really wants to improve sales the i-Cockpit must go.

408 GT Premium Fastback Hybrid has a tiny 100kW/230Nm 1.2L Turbo Petrol engine coupled to a 15.6kW/51Nm electric motor through a 6-speed DCT. The new model gets 4.7L/100km, emitting CO2 emissions of 107 g/km in the process. While this is way above the 1.3L/100k of the PHEV, the PHEV only achieved the 1.3 if it was plugged in regularly. Most PHEVs are not plugged in regularly.

The vehicle’s mild hybrid battery system recharges while decelerating, but won’t have the 60km EV range of the outgoing model. Although the mild hybrid 48v system shouldn’t be confused with a full hybrid set-up, most buyers won’t pick the difference.

Technology and Comfort

The 408 GT Premium Fastback Hybrid continues the tip-top feature list found in the excellent PHEV. Wireless phone charging is essential with wireless CarPlay, as longer trips can drain resources faster than a kid in a candy shop. The 360-degree camera system affords enhanced visibility, and the premium 10-speaker FOCAL sound system is crisp and clear. The standard sunroof was previously a costly option, and gives the cabin an airy ambience. It’s a shame the buyer doesn’t get a chance to opt out of the sunroof, making the 408 even cheaper.

The cabin has a 10-inch HD touchscreen for infotainment and vehicle controls, with another screen in front of the driver. There is no HUD, with Peugeot persevering with its i-Cockpit instead. Peugeot claims the high-set screen and small steering wheel works like a head-up display, but only an HUD works like an HUD, right?

Stunning Design

The 408 GT Premium Fastback Hybrid is more than just a posh mum’s taxi; it’s an out-and-proud visual statement. The fastback crossover design blends SUV and sedan styles resulting in a coupe-like roofline. The imperious grille is bookended by PEUGEOT’s signature ‘Fang’ LED daytime running lights. The 408 comes in five colours, including Okenite White, Selenium Grey, Nera Black, Obsession Blue, and Elixir Red. The last 2 offer a welcome break from the sea of blancmange that is the modern carpark.

Previously 20”, the new 19-inch wheels still fill the arches with a certain sophisticated masculinity without sacrificing the things that made the outgoing model such an outstanding design statement.

The PEUGEOT Promise

David Owen, General Manager of PEUGEOT Australia, highlighted the significance of this new model for Australian consumers. “The PEUGEOT 408 GT Premium Fastback Hybrid represents a great opportunity for Aussie motorists—combining hybrid technology with the bold design and driving pleasure that our customers expect. It is a vehicle that delivers an exceptional ownership experience, proving that performance can coexist seamlessly with new energy, affordability, and great European design.”

Earlier decades of Peugeot in Australia gave the brand the reputation of being expensive and underpowered (thinking of the 505 range, and all of the ’07 models). Reducing the power sounds like a terrible idea. The power wasn’t the problem with 408 PHEV, the price was.
