Jaecoo J7 PHEV to Hit the Roads in Early 2025

Jaecoo is a freshly minted brand, created by Chery in 2023. New Chinese brands are coming thick and fast

Jaecoo is launch the J7 PHEV, a plug-in hybrid SUV from China. Featuring their SHS (Super Hybrid System) technology, this new model is promised to deliver something new.

The SHS, developed by Chery, Jaecoo’s parent company, uses their third-generation hybrid engine technology. This hybrid combines a fossil fuel engine with an electric motor, delivering lower emissions.

A Vision for a “Cleaner” Future

“The J7 PHEV is more than just an SUV — it’s a statement of our vision for a cleaner, greener future,” said Lewis Lu, CEO of Jaecoo Australia. “We’re proud to offer our customers a solution that blends innovation, practicality, and responsibility.”

The J7 PHEV’s SHS technology is built around three key components that together ensure superior performance, whether you’re driving through the city or venturing into remote areas:

  1. Fifth-Generation 1.5TDGI Hybrid Engine This hybrid engine, featuring six advanced technologies, achieves a remarkable thermal efficiency of 44.5%, providing excellent fuel economy. With a “fuel supply on demand” system, the engine optimizes fuel usage, striking the perfect balance between power and efficiency, no matter where you drive in Australia.
  2. Stepless Electric Hybrid DHT System With four driving modes — pure electric, series, parallel, and energy recovery — the J7 PHEV adapts to the driver’s needs. For city commuters, it offers the benefit of pure electric operation at low speeds (under 40 km/h), while highway speeds (over 80 km/h) are efficiently powered by the hybrid system. This adaptability ensures the best performance while minimizing fuel consumption, giving the J7 PHEV an impressive combined range of up to 1200 km.
  3. High-Performance Hybrid Battery Equipped with state-of-the-art safety features, this battery is built to endure the toughest environments. Jaecoo claims the battery to be impact-resistant and waterproof, words you hope are never put to the test. Additionally, with a pure electric range of up to 90 km (WLTP), the J7 PHEV can provide the benefits of an EV to those with access to home charging. So far, PHEVs have not had on-board charging that was fast enough to be able to use public charging. Public charging usually comes with time or cost restrictions.

Driving and Safety

The J7 PHEV’s has dual-driving modes; zero-emission electric vehicle (EV) and long-range hybrid (HEV). We’ve been used to hybrids as a bridge between our petrol/diesel and the smoothness of an EV giving owners an enjoyable driving experience for any scenario — from daily commutes to long road trips, and are less controversial than an EV.

The vehicle’s hybrid battery is equipped with rapid-response safety mechanisms, such as a 2-millisecond power-off protection in the event of a collision.

Details to come

Details regarding specifications and pricing will be revealed closer to the J7 PHEV’s official launch in Q1, 2025.
