KGM, formerly known as SsangYong, is revving things up in Australia with a fresh new name and the highly anticipated debut of the MY25 Torres SUV. After being acquired by Korea’s KG Group in 2022, SsangYong is now rebranded to KGM, carrying forward its heritage with the iconic winged logo, but with a sharper focus on the future.
While previous Ssangyong offerings have been highly suspect in the looks department (yes Chairman, we’re looking at you) the all-new Torres SUV is a bit of a looker. It is a medium-sized, feature-packed SUV with surprisingly fabulous looks and all the space a growing Aussie family (or large group of drunken mates) needs. Priced from $38,000 driveaway, the Torres offers bang for your buck, with plenty of room, technology, and a rugged design that’ll turn heads on the highway, for the right reasons.
SsangYong, which has been building reliable if unattractive conveyances 4x4s since 1954, first hit Aussie shores in the mid-’90s. Now, KGM continues that tradition with a Melbourne-based national headquarters and parts distribution centre, still committed to offering solid, dependable vehicles at fair dinkum prices, with a ripper 7-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. Unlike many brands who limit their warranties when used for business reasons, even for tradies and commercial use.
Following in the footsteps of the often-overlooked Musso dual-cab ute and Rexton 7-seater, the Torres joins the KGM family stocked with shelves full of fancy features. Happy campers hitting the bush should find the Torres fits the needs of picky punters wanting a spacious interior and massive boot—perfect for chucking in the gear and hitting the road.
Stevan Dimitrovski, KGM’s National Marketing Manager, is pumped for the launch: “The Torres is a full-sized medium SUV with striking good looks and a bigger boot, so Aussies can pack more in. Whether it’s camping, beach trips, or the weekend BBQ, the Torres is designed for the way we live.”

Even with design cues that are intended to scream bold and rugged, the Torres fights to stand out from the crowd. They’ve roped in a couple of lightly-fuzzed gen Z’s to craft sharp LED headlights, tough grille, and couple of black A-pillars give it a strong road presence.
Inside, it’s all about comfort and tech, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, high-tech charcoal-black interiors, and loads of headroom. Plus, the boot space? A whopping 703 litres, which jumps to 1,526 litres with the seats down. That’s enough room for all your camping gear, the esky, and unimpressed dog.
The Torres is good-looking; but how about the safety?
Safety includes the now-required Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, and bonus eight airbags. Trailer Stability Assist is handy for those insisting on clogging highways with caravans.
Under the bonnet, the Torres makes the most of its 120kW/ 280Nm 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine and 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission. The Ultimate model features all-wheel drive with a lock mode for off-road fun. With a wading depth of 300mm, make sure the creeks are in a lowish mood.
Available in three trims—the entry-level ELX, the Adventure, and the top-of-the-range Ultimate—the Torres starts at $38,000 driveaway. The Ultimate adds adaptive cruise control, leather seats, and a panoramic sunroof, the former I’d have hoped to be in all models
The new Torres is set to hit Aussie showrooms in October 2024, ready to take on the local SUV market already crammed full of tough competition. KGM’s newest addition is perfect for life Down Unde, in the city, or when lost in the bush.
