Hyundai’s all-new SANTA FE is set to launch soon, bringing a new group of buyers to a sexier, more rugged SUV.

Hyundai was keen to interest a newer, younger adventurer to what was a model glued to an older buyer reputation, something which has doomed many a model. Not to be discouraged, Hyundai surveyed young adults about their vehicle needs and lifestyles and, surprise, surprise, those young adults yearn for the outdoors. Millennials are said to spend more time outside and more money on outdoor products than the average outdoor lifestyle punter.

55 percent of the U.S. population did outdoorsy things in 2022. Europe is following that keen bucolic trend with 223 million users by 2027. South Koreans are keen on ‘Chabak’ (car camping), with registrations for caravans getting a fourfold increase between 2015 and 2020.

Based on that, all-new SANTA FE’s ‘Open for More’ concept is intended to do that outdoorsy thing in comfort and security.

‘Open for More’

The all-new SANTA FE is said to bring a terrace-like living space to the rear end. This longer wheelbase has third-row seating too, and does it with plenty of space to spare.

The fifth-generation claims to be either the world’s first, first-in-class, or class-leading. Previously only seen in EVs, the First-row Relaxation Seat has a Leg Rest to recline, giving a weightless feeling for those in the posh pews.

The six-seat model has a second-row with power-reclining independent seats with armrests. providing rear passengers with a level of convenience and comfort that is unparalleled in its class. Their power fold-and-dive feature has a cushion-angle adjustment, a world-first feature.

There is a 6.6” climate control display and a Bilateral Multi-Console storage space, accessible to both front and rear passengers. The driver has a Digital Centre Mirror, a high-speed, dual wireless charging system for smartphones, and 27W USB C ports.

In a post-covid world, the UV-C Sterilisation Tray, located on top of the passenger glove box, allows for easy sterilisation of items like cell phones and wallets, etc.

Another safety feature is a radar-based Rear Occupant Alert (ROA) that searches for anything in the rear seats once the ignition is turned off.

Over-the-air (OTA) updates

These allow ensure vehicle systems to date by an inbuilt SIM card, so owners don’t have to wait for the next service.

The Cabin

SANTA FE’s cabin design feels spacious and airy.

The H-shaped dashboard puts air vents, and dual 12.3” screens in a graceful arc in front of the driver.  The screens form a Panoramic Curved Display for driving data and infotainment control.

Hyundai also claims a class-leading cargo capacity and an extra-large tailgate opening. The C-pillar has secreted grab handle for getting in and out. SANTA FE lays claim to excellent second- and third-row legroom. Most SUVs with a 3rd row claim it is for adults, but the reality is limited to height-challenged teens at best. Santa Fe has best-in-class third-row comfort which includes a recline function, and headroom has been increased, with customer feedback making the repeated response as a fault in many SUVs.

Petrol-powered SANTA FE’s second-row legroom is up by 35 mm, to 1,075 mm over the previous model. The hybrid’s second-row legroom is also improved, being 20 mm  (now 1,055 mm) roomier than the car it replaces.. The third-row legroom length has increased by 15 mm, to 761 mm.

Best-in-class third-row headroom is up by 69 mm, to 958 mm, and seating height up by 30 mm, to 282 mm].  Added comfort includes third-row reclining by 10 degrees, also an increase over the previous generation.

All-new SANTA FE is released in Korea in the second half of this year, followed by North America/Europe in the first half of next year.
