The new IM6 Performance is proof that China’s EV makers have skipped the warm-up act and gone straight to headlining. Equal parts luxury, pace, and gadgetry, this SUV is a game-changer in every sense.
While legacy brands are still fussing about with half-baked hybrids, the IM6 lands with all guns blazing: plush, powerful, and packed with tech you didn’t know you wanted. After a week behind the wheel, here are our Top 10 favourite things about the IM6 Performance—details and all.

- IM6 Auto Lane Change – Tech That’s Almost Perfect
On paper, auto lane change should be seamless. In practice? A little diva. It only responds if the indicator stalk is fully engaged, and demands both hands on the wheel throughout. It works when it works—but heaven forbid you lift a pinky.
- IM6 CarPlay – Moody but Worth the Effort
Pairing took a few failed flirts before finally connecting. Once it locked in, though, CarPlay behaved flawlessly for the rest of our drive.
- IM6 Menu System – Fabulous but Fiddly, Si Vous Plait
The infotainment menu is layered and clever, but best fettled before driving. Want to swap radio stations? Easier by voice or home screen favourites. What’s missing is a single “all favourites” page with big, bold icons—just like your iPhone. Gimmie some buttons, si vous plait.
- IM6 20-Speaker Sound System – Concert Hall on Wheels
The 20-speaker system is nothing short of lush. Crisp highs, full-bodied lows, and presets to suit every taste. Pop divas sound divine; string quartets sublime.
- IM6 Gadgets Galore – Luxury SUV Features You’ll Love
The IM6 is bursting with delightful knick-knacks:
- Manual door release hidden in rear door pockets.
- Extendable front seat squabs (for those with longer pins).
- Electric door locks, massage/heated/cooled front seats.
- Rear seat recline controls, perfect for a stretch.
- Cargo hold suspension toggle to raise/lower the ride.
- Anti-dive braking, crab-walk four-wheel steering, and voice control (grumpy but charming).
Oh, and the rear tablet/phone stands? Brilliant. Simply magnetise your iPhone (or attach adaptors if you’re in the Android camp) to the seatback in front and voilà: an inflight cinema. Passengers can sit, blanket over knees, watching a movie at just the right angle. That’s thoughtful design.
- IM6 Cabin – Whisper-Quiet Luxury
Double-pane glass and active noise cancellation create pure serenity. Even with Aussie roads resembling Roman ruins, the IM6 glides with Zen-like calm. At low speeds, you might not even realise you’re moving.
- IM6 Interior Elegance – Vegan Chic Luxury SUV
No cows harmed, no moo required. The IM6’s soft-touch faux leather and airy colour palette give the cabin a chiffon-curtain-like elegance, light and ethereal. Everything curves gently—dash and doors flowing in harmony like a Vivaldi concerto. No harsh edges, no awkward joins. Just tasteful restraint and a little fabulous flair.
- IM6 Ride Comfort – Magic Carpet Mode (No Rearranged Organs Here)
Air suspension cushions the IM6 like a five-star hotel mattress on wheels. It wafts along like chiffon curtains in a summer breeze, insulating you from the chaos beneath.
Some might find the separation from the road a touch unnerving, but for me? Bliss. I don’t want my insides jiggled around like a Bondi brunch scramble. Sporty suspensions may thrill some, but I prefer to arrive at my destination with my vital organs exactly where they started.
Passengers can sit blanket over knees, tablet or phone MagSafed to the seatback in front, enjoying a movie at just the right angle. The IM6 isn’t trying to be a hot hatch—it’s a magic carpet EV that soaks up battered Aussie bitumen and leaves you gliding, serene, and intact.
- IM6 Space – Freedom Redefined in a Luxury EV
EV architecture means no bulky transmission tunnels or fuel tanks, so every centimetre goes to passengers. The centre console is double-decked with clever storage. Rear seats, often a chiropractor’s nightmare, are instead palatial.
And that nifty phone/tablet mount system? It’s proof the IM6’s designers thought about how real people actually live in their cars. Families, commuters, or divas on the go—it works for everyone.
- IM6 Pace – Effortless Speed in a Luxury SUV
With a 0–100 km/h dash in 3.4 seconds, the IM6 is discreetly savage. No drama, just instant speed and seamless power. Four-wheel steering adds agility, but the real trick is how refined it feels while leaving sports cars gasping.
Verdict: A True Game-Changer
The real issue here is that legacy brands have been left in a sickening aftermath of inadequacy and regret by both the price and quality of MG’s crowning glory.
We warned ‘em! We said that Chinese car makers had the where-with-all to whet the Tirrenos whistle of battle-hardened buyers. We said they were coming for the mastheads with all guns a-blazin, and here they are.
For the same number of shekels, you could have a Toyota bZ4X/Subaru Solterra that is half as fast, half as equipped, looks a bit of a mess inside and out, has a lower range, a much smaller battery, and charges two and a half times slower. Other front runners under 80K include BYD Sealion 6, Cupra Ateca, Genesis GV70, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Hyundai Tucson, Kia EV5, Tesla Model Y, Kia Sportage Hybrid, Lexus NX, Mercedes-Benz GLB, and Peugeot 408, but none match the IM6 Performance in technical/mechanical specifications, quality, feel, and performance for the money.
Put simply, IM6 is a game-changer.
