Toyota LandCruiser 300 Hybrid has turned up with the least apologetic kind of electrification. This is not the RAV4 trick of sipping fuel and making everyone feel virtuous. Toyota is putting its i-FORCE MAX V6 hybrid system into the two dearest LandCruiser 300 grades, then asking more than $156,000 before on-road costs.

The GR Sport performance hybrid starts at $156,060, while the Sahara ZX version starts at $156,810. That is only $750 between them, which makes the choice less about price and more about whether the buyer wants the off-road toy box or the plusher Sahara badge. Arguably there is very little between them either way. The big question is can the aging technology compete with newer, better equipped, more powerful imports that are cheaper with vastly better fuel economy.
The headline number is 341kW and 790Nm. Toyota says that makes this the most powerful LandCruiser it has ever built, with 114kW more power and 90Nm more torque than the 3.3-litre V6 turbo-diesel LandCruiser 300.

Toyota calls it a performance hybrid, and it is certainly that. The system uses a twin-turbo V6 petrol engine and a single electric motor-generator mounted between the engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission. It can drive on either power source or both together, depending on load and demand.
Toyota is not selling this as the quiet hybrid brunch. transporter The pitch is towing, high-speed cruising, off-road torque and quicker response when the big wagon is hauling people, gear or a caravan full of holiday possibilities.
Both hybrid grades also get electric power steering, whereas diesel LandCruiser 300’s have good old-fashioned hydraulic assistance. Toyota has added a 200V/1500W rear auxiliary power socket for small appliances, plus a 40/20/40 split rear seat back.
Both hybrids have full-time four-wheel drive, five-mode multi-terrain select and adaptive variable suspension. Sahara ZX gets a rear Torsen limited-slip differential and the GR Sport adds lockable front and rear diffs and electronically controlled E-KDSS suspension.
The cabin remains an all-Toyota zone. Both grades get leather-accented trim, heated and ventilated front seats, heated and ventilated outboard rear seats, power operation up front, a 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen and a 14-speaker JBL audio system. Sahara ZX also keeps the dual rear-seat entertainment system.
Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series is covered by its 5-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. Capped-price servicing runs for the first 5 years or 100,000km at $450 per service.
The Land Cruiser has a lot of stiff competition. The Denza B8 represents a further shift in the large SUV segment, using its plug-in hybrid architecture to challenge traditional heavyweights.
It has a dedicated ladder-frame chassis, and packs a walloping 425kW/ 760Nm its 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine and high-output electric motors. The dedicated hybrid automatic allows electric motors to drive the wheels almost all of the time. LandCruiser 300 10-speed automatic Hybrid uses Toyota’s parallel system we all know well, the B8 has over 100km of pure electric range and a 3,500kg towing capacity, all while near 50 grand less. This high-output electrification parade continues with the BYD Yangwang U8, a quad-motor “range-extender” whose 880kW dance card includes extreme tech like tank turns and emergency flotation. While you marvel at that, we move on to the established luxury of Lexus LX 700h with the same 341kW twin-turbo V6 hybrid system as the Toyota but adds a layer of semi-aniline poshness. Finally, the Range Rover P550e is our European alternative with a 410kW straight-six PHEV that prioritises on-road pace and has a hefty 3,000kg tow rating.
