VW to Launch Cupra in Australia As a Performance Brand


Where’s what we know:

CUPRA Australia is readying for a 2022 launch with two SUVs and a hatchback. There will be performance and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains in the initial offerings.

CUPRA is from Barcelona and launched in 2018 as a stand-alone brand of what you might known as SEAT. CUPRA has its own corporate headquarters and a racing car workshop in Martorell (Barcelona), in addition to a network of specialized points of sale around the world.

The Australian launch line-up will comprise of three models – the CUPRA Formentor crossover SUV, the CUPRA Ateca SUV, plus the CUPRA Leon hatchback.

Australia is CUPRA’s test market. It will trade here as a performance brand within VGA. CUPRA prices will begin at near $40,000 to around $60,000.

VGA’s Managing Director Michael Bartsch said “The presence of CUPRA within VGA perfectly complements the diverse offerings of Volkswagen, Audi and ŠKODA.”

Further underlining the quirky nature of the brand, Cupra will sell online and via an agency. Cupra highly visible with cool “pop-up” stores existing high-profile places like shopping centres etc.

Servicing will be available at all Volkswagen dealers. Warranty is five-year/ unlimited kilometre, with service plans anncounded closer to the local launch.

CUPRA will sit within VGA by, directed by Ben Wilks. Ben has been with VGA since its establishment in 2001.

“CUPRA represents a great opportunity for VGA as a whole,” Mr Wilks said.

“Australians love performance vehicles. Two out of three new private sales are SUVs. CUPRA’s debut Australian range nails the brief, enabling VGA to offer more of what the discerning private customer wants.”

The Australian launch of the CUPRA brand and its distinct line-up is planned for Q2 2022.

  • 3 petrol engines: 140KW, 180kW and 221kW
  • Plug-in hybrid (PHEV): 180kW

CUPRA Ateca

  • 221kW Petrol with 4DRIVE AWD

CUPRA Formentor

  • 3 petrol engines: 140kW with 4DRIVE AWD, 180kW and 228kW with 4DRIVE AWD
  • Plug-in hybrid (PHEV): 180kW

Detailed specification and pricing will be announced closer to the local launch.
