Gay icon, George Russell, drove in what must be one of the most exciting sessions ever.
George was chosen as Gay Racing Icon by readers in our recent poll. The Poll asked what racing driver gay viewers thought sexiest. Any scuttlebut about his actual sexuality is a story for another time.
F1 races always comment-worthy, but this one, on a dangerously wet track, will go down in history. “The car was really on it in these wet conditions,” Russell said, “and there is so much that has to go right – all the little details to give the driver confidence. You have to extract the most. I could put it all on the table and absolutely go for it.”
Russell came within grasp of snatching pole from Max Verstappen at the Belgian Grand Prix, one of the most challenging tracks in F1. Russell’s drive was of such historic significance that it will be talked about for years to come
The Williams team has not been doing terrible well according to some, but as Russell sat with Verstappen and Hamilton at the presser, he was asked about “impossible” session.

“The car was really on it in these wet conditions,” Russell said, “and there is so much that has to go right – all the little details to give the driver confidence. You have to extract the most. I could put it all on the table and absolutely go for it.”
The superb lap, under the leadership of team boss, Toto Wolff, was “risky but clever”.
The session was stopped after a big crash by young Lando Norris, leaving only enough time for a slow battry-charging lap, and a flying lap. Williams decided instead to send Russell out on full wet tyres. Russell did a quick prep lap, then really went for it.
“Toto’s description is probably perfectly fair. But we didn’t have a huge amount to lose.” Said Russell.
Verstappen and Hamilton both produced excellent rounds, but gorgeous George slipped in between them with a tissue thin 0.321secs behind Verstappen and 0.013secs ahead of Hamilton.
To make this stunning performance even more piquant, George is in a tough race with Hamilton team mate, Valtteri Bottas. The prize would be the second seat in the Mercedes team. While senior F1 figures say the decision has been made, Mercedes isn’t saying, for the time being.
“If it would have been an easier decision we would have made it early,” Wolff said, “because we know what we have with Valtteri and with George and both deserve to be looked after in the best possible way.
“They are both part of the [Mercedes] family and we hold them up high. There are pros and cons like with any driver line-up and there is no such thing as a perfect discussion.
“We just need to manage the situation well with whichever driver is not going to be in a Mercedes next year and make sure there is an exciting programme [for him]. And on the other side manage the station internally like we always have with Nico [Rosberg, Hamilton’s former team-mate] and George.”
