Chery Adds GT and E5 EV to Omoda 5 Range

Chery sold 7,000 Omoda 5 SUVs in a year, not bad for a company starting from scratch, again.

Although the Chinese state-owned company started producing cars in 1999, Omoda 5 only appeared on our market 12 months ago. It received decent reviews despite its wayward ADAS system, but showed just what can be done in a short period of time. It offered buyers a well-priced option in the small-to-medium SUV segment left vacant by the Koreans.

Chery Omoda 5 GT brings the graceful swooping roofline we now associate with coupé style SUVs.

Other new GT features include:

  • rejigged ADAS suite
  • multilink rear suspension replacing the torsion bar in the Omoda 5 EX/BX
  • 136kw/275Nm 1.6L 4-cylinder turbo 4-cylinder
  • 7-sp DCT automatic
  • FWD or AWD
  • 50w Qi charger
  • DAB+
  • Sound deadening double pain windows

Omoda 5 comes as the $38,990 GT or Omoda 5 AWD for $40,990. Both are drive-away prices with a further $2,000 factory bonus to sweeten the pot even further.

The Omoda 5 GT’s 1.6L turbo is more powerful than the 1.5L sibling, with economy of a very promising 6.8L/100km (fwd) and 7.4L (awd).

ABOVE: 2024 Chery Omoda 5 GT and Omoda E5 EV

Omoda E5 is different kettle of fish.

Chery was unable to provide price and specification in detail, choosing to let the striking EV speak for itself. The front end has come in for particular attention, with the huge grille swept away in favour of a lower bonnet and sculptured face. The electric charge-port cover in on the front face and is operated from inside the cabin. Maximum 80kw DC charging seems somewhat behind the pack, but the price may yet make up for that oversight. The ability to drive into a space eliminates heavy charging cables being draped amidships.

If the striking metalwork looks good, the cabin will really knock your socks off.

Interior design feels sumptuous, with  around 90% of the cabin being brand-spanking new according to Chery Australia MD, Lucas Harris. In the controlled lighting of a subterranean show space, Omoda E5’s lavish interior looked beautifully executed.

The soft touch surfacing is next level, and  the curved digital dash stretches across 2 large screens. The console is clean and clear of clutter, but is is the doors that captured my undivided attention. Their stunning 3D design elements are gently backlit in limpid pools subtle ambience, crowned by drilled aluminium speaker grilles.

The versatile platform makes good use of space, the 60kwh battery and 150kw motor provide a balance between power, storage, and price. While Lucas Harris hinted that the final ink had yet to be applied to the battery supply chain details, more would be revealed closer to the mid-year launch date. Harris inferred that the company would be competing energetically with the other car makers, including those from China.

Is a price war about to erupt? How can established retailers possibly compete?

Stay tuned for more.
