Toyota Adds 48v Hybrid System and Other Goodies to Hilux

Hilux is the biggest selling vehicle in the country, depending on the month. As it wrangles buyers to jostle for the top spot, Toyota engineers got out their screw drivers and bolted a 48v system onto the diesel drivetrain for $590.

Exterior elements have been given the lightest of refreshes, again, not that you can really tell. Depending on the grade, there is a new set of LED headlamps bumper, grille, mirrors, and front and rear sensors. Inside, some lucky buyers will also get wireless phone charging.

All tailgates now have gas dampers that stop the big chunk of metal from slamming open, and lift assist which does what it says on the box.

The 48V system is the biggest change

Unlike other car makers, Toyota isn’t calling Hilux’s 48v system a hybrid, even though that’s what it is. No doubt this would confuse customers who may mistakenly think a Prius had been TARDIS’d into the engine bay. Toyota has opted to call it “V-Active”, which in no way describes what the technology does. It is a stroke of genius as long as you ignore the naff name.

Instead, 48V system employs a motor/generator and a small battery that stores captured energy for later use. It allows the new Stop/Start to turn the engine off at traffic lights, but leave the electric air conditioning running. It will spin the engine to life, smooth out braking, and be used to give the engine extra pep under acceleration.

Idling goes from 740rpm down to 600rpm, and fuel economy is said to improve by 10% over the regular 2.8 diesel unit.

Off-road modes will also benefit from assistance at low speeds, and the motor is mounted high up so that Hilux keeps its off-road/fording ability. Most other 48v hybrids have the motor between the engine and gearbox.

V-Active is available on x4 double-cab SR, SR5 and Rogue and comes with standard Multi-Terrain Select. MTS has six selectable modes that when in high range, can be set to Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud and Deep Snow. In low range, Auto, Sand, Mud and Rock modes are available

While some of the additions are just a bit of lippy and eye liner, the tailgate changes and 48v system really give Hilux a kick into the future.

Price: $26,475 to $74,310
