FIAT Australia has finally announced the MY23 FIAT 500. Leaving the run late doesn’t mean the bijou city car doesn’t get a load of loving.

Fiat has positioned itself as a premium car maker, and although the 27 grand asking price isn’t a lot in the world of new cars, it is an awful lot for a v ery small, low-powered tiny car. Fiat is asking a lot of buyers who can get much more tech, much more power, and more space in cars costing less. Considering Fiat 500 started off as the Italian “people’s car”, the pricing says Fiat 500 is more likely to be seen as a second car to a BMW owner than something a Maccers worker would buy.

Once upon a time, European lanes were lousy with bubble cars, 3-wheelers, and icons such as VW’s Beetle, and Fiat’s 500 Bambino. They were cheap to buy, cheap to run, and could be fixed by the owner if they were handy with a spanner. However, the new baby Fiat is the brand’s only passenger car presence in Australia, coming in a go-quick Abarth (no matter mow much they try to spin it off as another brand), an electric 500, and the standard 500. The standard Fiat 500 comes in a single trim level, the cheerily named “Dolcevita”, or “Sweet Life” in English. The is a Fiat van if you’re really keen of Fiat and demand more space.

There is something disarming about the cheeky 500, allure and reputation of Italian design puts Fiat in the pantheon of such luminaries as Allesi and Gucci, as well as Ferrari and Lamborghini. When Fiat Chrysler joined Peugeot Citroën to form Stellantis, we hoped for the quirkiness of individual brands to remain, and it has. Although not all brands will survive, Fiat’s 500 has a wonderfully long and colourful history that deserves love, and many of its famous owners agree.

The MY23 Dolcevita has a fixed glass roof, chrome body kit, standard chrome exhaust tip, as well as  the Lusso option pack fitted as standard. This gives the little the gorgeous little cup of espresso nifty things like tinted rear and side windows.

There are a couple of posh touches inside, such as new black cloth seats with Fiat emblazoned across in big out and prod lettering. Dolcevita’s has a cute 7” TFT cluster, and a highway essential, cruise control. While I very much doubt you’ll do the Sydney/Melbourne run all that often, freeway use is not out of the questions. .
