We’ve been driving the LEXUS UX SUV, and as always, the terrible infotainment interface was the subject that drew the most attention.
It has been ridiculed by anyone who has ever used it. The last decade is about to be put behind us, with the NX arriving with a completely new 14” touch screen. While some LEXUS cars already have a touch screen, it remains set so far back that it is hard to reach, and hard to use. The menu remained the same, with options often hidden under many layers, and in completely unrelated places.
Other changes have included the addition of “Crafted” editions. These editions are built on the base model of UX, NX, and RX, and come complete with pack 2 including tasty treats like a sunroof. Crafted Edtions also have with 3 years of LEXCUS’ Encore Platinum, which is worth its weight in gold. Part of what you get, is the ability to swap out your LEXUS as needed. If you have a special weekend, you might want an LS or LC. If you’re tripping into the wilds, you might want call the full 4WD LX into service.
LEXUS sold a mere 775 cars in June, for a total of 6,167 so far this year. This pales into insignificance against Mercedes (2,385/18,526) and BMW (1,814/15,922), Audi bringing up the posh brands’ rear guard at 1,371/10.384 for the month/year.
What can LEXUS do to fix this? It isn’t as if the look isn’t right. They just need to appeal to a wider crowd with something funky, fun, and fast.

What the Boys Said:
Casper:
I liked the UX, but LEXUS has never been on my radar. People in their mid-20’s have hugely different taste, and if I’m going for a posh brand, I’d go German or British. But the UX was really rather nice, and I’m told the upper LEXUS models are even nicer.
Dad had a lot of posh cars in his career, and my favourites were the Jags. What I like about LEXUS is Toyota reliability. That matters when you’re about and about on your own.
Max:
LEXUS means a reliable car, even the SUVs.
There seems to be a lot of LEXUS’ cars on the road, but they’re still fairly rare. They look great on the road, but I’m not in love with the grille. but at least it is something different. They’ve done big grilles better than BMW with the latest, and rather ugly, M3/M4.
The cabin is a lovely place, even in the base models like UX.
I hate the infotainment system, and it would be enough to keep me from buying one. I’m looking for a new car in this price range and have tested Rav4, and some Kias. Brand matters less to me than price and features.
Ethan:
I love LEXUS and always have. They’ve had some truly hideous exteriors, but have always been great on the road.
The new IS is gorgeous, and that Encore programme is a stroke of genius. Except for Alan, the group is under 30, yet we all think the looks are fabulous.
I’ve always thought of LEXUS as a brand for old people because as handsome as they are, there is not one I’d call, “cool.”
Conclusion:
The UX review and video will be out over the weekend, but one thing is clear, LEXUS is not appealing to younger people like Mercedes, BMW and Audi does. What they need is a proper hot hatch halo model, not a fat, heavy, RC-F that no-body buys. They’ve rarely put a foot wrong, but it’s worth noting that the fuel pump is the only thing that let me down. An LC500 broke down mid trip, well outside the city limits. It was later the subject of the recall, so as painful as that
That is something they’re tried to fix, but have not manged well.
