Coach doors with no B-pillar between them, 490kW, and an airbag for the roof glass. Genesis GV90 broke cover at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco on 19 August. Genesis’ first full-size flagship SUV kept far more of the 2024 NEOLUN concept than these exercises usually do.
Genesis GV90 comes in 2 forms. GV90 Neolun gets the Neolun Arch Gate coach doors, and standard GV90 sticks with conventional swing doors and frame-flush glass. Genesis gave no pricing and no local timing, and there’s nothing on the Genesis Australia site either. What we did get is a global spec sheet with 2 claimed world-firsts on it, both of them Genesis marking its own homework.
Coach Doors and a Missing B-Pillar
Neolun Arch Gate is the headline act. Front and rear doors open toward each other with nothing in between, and Genesis calls it a world first for doors that open and close independently. A dual-motion hinge slides the rear door slightly outward, then rotates it open, so a passenger in the second row isn’t stuck waiting for the driver to get out first.

Take the B-pillar out and something else has to hold the roof up. Genesis went with high-strength dual steel beams inside the doors and a cabin frame 1.5 times thicker than usual. High-strength steel tubes and structural foam turn the lot into a concealed roll cage. The claim is crash performance equal to a car built with pillars. No independent test exists yet, and there’s no ANCAP rating to point at.
The shape leans on the Korean moon jar, which is a polite way of saying round-shouldered and deliberately plain. Wing Face headlamps using Micro Lens Array optics span the nose under a clamshell bonnet. The Two-Line signature is laser-engraved into the bodywork rather than stuck on top of it. Dual-layered G-Matrix chrome moved down into the lower bumper. No rear spoiler, flush surface-emitting tail lights, and Genesis spelled out across the back.
Genesis GV90 measures 5,285mm long, 2,030mm wide, and 1,815mm tall on 22-inch tyres, or 1,825mm if you take the 24-inch forged wheels that come standard on Neolun. Wheelbase is 3,245mm, and there are 16 exterior colours, 13 gloss and 3 matte.
What Genesis GV90 Does Without a Start Button
There’s no start button. Pull the door handle and the car powers itself up, then shuts the door behind you. The Motion Column Shifter swings from 12 o’clock to 2 o’clock, the Crystal Sphere Controller rotates open, and the tweeter covers slide aside in the dash. Press the brake pedal and you’re away. That’s a lot of moving parts standing in for a button.
The complex centre screen is a pop-up OLED. It is 23.6 inches down and 24.6 inches once it lifts 90mm with the car parked. There’s no instrument cluster which is compensated for by a 25-inch head-up display showing speed and navigation, and all the driver assistance readouts.
Infotainment is called Pleos Connect, built on the already-buggy Android Automotive OS. Third-party apps are through the Pleos App Market and there is a generative AI assistant called Gleo AI. We’ve written before about why Android Automotive OS can be a digital nightmare. The flakiness has become a problem in most new cars and is something buyers should test before buying.
Bang & Olufsen Premier 3D system, has 25 speakers with 7.1.4-channel Dolby Atmos. Acoustic Lens tweeters sit at both ends of the dash, with 4 more speakers in the headliner. Virtual Venue does Boston Symphony Hall and Wembley Stadium, and Beosonic handles tone. Every window is acoustic glass over 5mm thick, the windscreen and vision roof included, with high-expansion foam injected into the body cavities. Quiet is expensive and is where Genesis spent the money to rise above opposition.
Seats are covered in premium leather and comes with 15 air cells apiece and pulse vibration massage. On Neolun, the front seats turn a full 180 degrees at the press of a door-trim button while parked, so the cabin can face itself. The metal-coated windscreen heats the glass itself to clear frost, no climate control required, and that’s a first for Hyundai Motor Group. Radiant heat warmers sit in the armrests and door trims of the first 2 rows. Ambient Glow lights the cabin indirectly and dims while voice recognition listens.
Executive Suite drops Neolun to 4 seats and lays a real wood veneer floor across the second row with radiant underfloor heating, borrowed from Korean ondol. There’s a Comfort Partition to seal the cabin off from the boot, roller blinds, semi-aniline leather, a second-row tower console, a fridge, plus integrated tables. The Smart Vision Roof uses PDLC film split into 6 transparency zones, each set on its own. Genesis GV90 Neolun First Edition is a limited run in 3 colour combinations, and gets two-tone paint, body-colour 24-inch forged wheels, and wool cashmere trim.
490kW, 123.5kWh, and an Estimate Instead of a Rating
Genesis GV90 uses a new platform called eMP, exclusive to the flagship, and has a flat floor as seen in other HMG products. The battery is 123.5kWh, the biggest Hyundai Motor Group has put in an EV, and is managed wirelessly. Range is around 500km for the 7-seater, but is yet to be tested outside Hyundai labs. Charging is 10% to 80% in 22 minutes on a 350kW charger, again, typical for HMG including genesis, Hyundai and Kia.
A 240kW/350Nm front motor and 250kW/450Nm rear motor total 490kW and 800Nm together. That makes this new car the most powerful EV the group has built. Dual E-LSD front and rear is another group first. Australia currently gets rather smaller Genesis EVs, the 2027 GV60 from $88,300 and the sharper GV60 Magma, so a 5.3-metre flagship would be new ground for the local showroom to take the Chinese people movers on at their own game. Pricing is likely to be a different story.
Genesis GV90 uses multi-chamber air suspension with adjustable stiffness and ride height, over mono-tube dual valve electronically controlled dampers. Rear wheel steering turns at up to 5 degrees, reducing the turning circle to mid-size car territory.
There are 12 airbags. One of them covers the roof glass in a rollover to stop occupants being thrown out, the world’s first Roof Airbag. The passenger bag is dual-depth and the seat cushions get airbags to stop submarining. Curtains reach the third row, and the side and knee bags all grew. An in-cabin monitoring system reads who’s sitting where and how, then sets the airbags and belts to suit.
The underbody is cast and extruded aluminium, the outer panels aluminium too, with ultra-high-strength steel through the sides. A deflector at the nose steers the car sideways in a small overlap crash. A slider ahead of the battery pushes the motor and subframe under the floor instead of into the pack. Cells are separated by Thermal Runaway Protection, and a cloud-based battery management system handles pre-diagnostics and flags an abnormality to the driver before it becomes somebody’s viral video.
So, no price, no local timing, no kerb weight, no boot figure. Genesis reached a million sales faster than any luxury brand, in under 8 years, according to José Muñoz. Some of that goodwill now funds a Marilyn Monroe event in New York and a Maggie Gyllenhaal short film bound for Venice. Genesis GV90 is on notice from Chinese challengers but certainly looks impressive.
