How to use Apple CarPlay in 2021 Subaru Outback

Apple Carplay and Android Auto have transformed How we listen to music while driving. In the 2021 Subaru Outback, and most other brands, use these simple steps:

1: unlock phone

2: plug in to USB via phone cable (be sure to select the USB that connects to audio system)

3: follow onscreen prompts on Phone and Subaru screens

4: use carplay as you would use your iphone (or android phone)

What can you ask Siri to do?

As long as you’ve allowed the system to access Siri while locked (this can be changed any time), you can simply say “Hey Siri”. You can also use the VOICE button on the steering wheel if you wish. A long press accesses Siri, and a short press uses the car system to change settings such as radio station or temperature, depending on the model.

Navigation:

For directions to “home” you must have set this in your phone previously. Otherwise Siri will not recognise your home address.

You can also ask for other directions using either street address, or place name. Currently, this will use Apple Maps ONLY. If you want to use google maps, Waze, or any other system, you have to input directions manually.

On a road trip, you can add way points as you go. This keeps your destination time visable.

NOTE: in most cars, these directions will only show on the central screen, not the driver’s instruments or HUD.

Messages:

To Send – “Hey Siri” followed by “text Johhny” and whatever message you wish.

To Read – “Hey Siri” followed by “read new messages” or “read recent messages”

Music – “Hey Siri” followed by “play playlist number 1” or an artist or track name.

Phone:

“Hey Siri” followed by “call Johnny, mobile”.

Other functions:

Try other functions such as time, current position, etc. You can use all Siri functions, so have at it, and stay safe.
