The eighth-generation midsize sedan makerover looks more expensive and faster than ever.

New SONATA takes the old 2019 SONATA, and gives it a makeover so dramatic, that it looks like a brand new model. New SONATA is called a four-door coupe, and it is, sort of. It takes cues from the All New Kona, with a light bar front and back, mixes it with a bit of i30 Sedan, a touch of IONIQ6, and a bit Genesis.

Sporty leanings:

SONATA uses an N Line-based exterior, and the extra touches that brings. SONATA’s low, lean, slinky, body has a more than passing resemblance to the IONIQ6 Streamliner. Something wonderfully wicked has crept into Hyundai Group design, and i like it. I like it a lot.

There is a strong horizontal front-end with Hyundai’s light bar, which they call a “Seamless Horizon Lamp”.  Headlamps are all but hidden in the wide grille and air intake. This fad i hoped would pass, but instead they’re doubling down. We are not far away from headlights being tiny “laser beams” (fingers held Austin Powers Style) projected from behind a slit.

The blackout finish along the bottom of the body that rises towards the rear, no doubt intended to portray motion even when standing still. At that, it is a great success, and looks rather sexy.

The rump sports a revised set of H-lights that incorporate another light bar. There is a lot of swoop going on. There is an integrated-style spoiler built into the deceptive hatch design. I say deceptive because, it may look like a hatch, but is a booted sport-back. The top model N Line gets a proper rear spoiler, dual twin-tip mufflers, and 19-inch wheels.

The Cabin

The cabin was already pretty sexy, and now follows the same those found in IONIQ models, such as the IONIQ5.

In a Hyundai brand first, SONATA has a panoramic curved display with 2 x 12.3-inch screens that appear as one. The touch-type climate control adds frequently accessed controls so the operator doesn’t have to schlepp through menus every 5 minutes.

The interior has had a general tidy-up, and what was already good, now has a premium feel.

SONATA’s interior space is accentuated by the gear shifter being moved up onto the steering column. Unlike Mercedes Benz, it won’t be mistaken for the indicator. This leaves the centre console with less clutter. The centre console has a palm rest by extending the armrest, which lets the fingers fall naturally to the controls in front of it. The large cup holder and tray will keep things tidy, and there are power/USB outlets handily placed at the base of the centre stack.

The Big Reveal

The new SONATA will be officially unveiled at the Seoul Mobility Show, March 30 – April 9, 2023.
