We’ve seen tempting pictures drip fed from overseas news sources, but a car is never “real” until local details are unveiled.

All-New Kia Niro, as the name suggests, is all new, on a new platform, with a new body, and glamourous new interior, and isn’t it tasty?

The EV (Electric Vehicle) and Hybrid (HEV) come as an S or GT-Line, allowing those who want partial electric driving to be had for as low as $44,380, on standard petrol.

The PHEV has been binned from the local line-up. Slow sales in the outgoing car shows that Australians aren’t keen on the conveniences of a hybrid when its combined with the inconvenience of plugging in. That’s a little sad for those able to plug in at home, and able to charge on the cheapest power at night.

The full electric version has a 150kw/255Nm electric motor with 64.8Kwh Li-ion Polymer battery. The hybrid has a revised 1.6 petrol engine combined with a small motor, for a total output of 104kw/265Nm.

A 10% to 80% charge from the very fastest 350kw charger takes 43m, 45m on a 100kw charger, and 1hr 5m on a 50kw outlet. Sadly, unlike her big sister, the EV6, Niro can’t take advantage of uber-fast outlets.

Should you want to charge at home, be prepared to leave it for couple of days to trickle charge. It takes around 27hours, but it is doable if you have a week of very short trips with long stints at home, right? For most of us, off-peak power is between 10pm and 7 am, something for the cheap-arses to keep in mind.

The CCS Combo2 charge port is in the front bumper (hoorah!). So, if/when you find a charger, you don’t need to hold your mouth, cross your fingers, and contort yourself to get the cable around the side.

0-100 times are a modest 7.8 secs in the EV, and for the HEV, 10.4 for the GT-line and 10.8 for the S.

Niro has grown slightly in size, with up to 475L of room in the boot. Other interior dimensions show how much Niro has improved.

Kia is jumping with glee at the inclusion of a telematics system included for the first time. It allows canny users to access vehicle data via a smartphone app. Although you are able to control and view functions, there are no over-the-air updates. The inbuilt SIM gives Niro cell access via Optus.

Looks are a world away from the previous car’s slightly frumpy face. There are 8 colours, some of which include contrast colours for the C-Pillar/body kit.

The chunky lass has the new-generation Kia body language, with complex LED lighting at the front, and tail lights that run up the rear end, Volvo-style.

Niro is best thought of as a rather sexy-looking high-riding hatch, with 150mm of ground clearance on the EV, and front wheel drive, Niro is more of a city car with paved country weekend aspirations.

Inside

The big-ticket items lay in front of the driver, with big screens for drive data and infotainment. Top models gain an HUD, with data displayed on the windscreen. Dials are gone, but S models get smaller screens.

As with all Hyundai Group cars, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto comes only on base models, sans navigation. Wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto is available on all Niros.

Other tasty treats include Harmon Kardon sound, 4 USB outlets, dual zone climate control, and the naff “Sounds of Nature” that can apparently put children to sleep. Nuff said. Kia shoehorns in a load of convenience features like bottle and cup holders (4 of each), and a clever rear cargo cover that can be also used as a sun shade.

The design looks posh, functional, and clever. The centre console houses the gear dial, with some models having paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. The EV uses them for regenerative braking and one pedal driving, while the hybrid combines braking levels with gears while in petrol model.

Like all Kias, there is a 7 year warranty to keep you safe and sound.
