Lexus has provided a sneak peek of its forthcoming all-new IS Line ahead of its debut at NAIAS in Detroit on January 15.
The all-new IS adopts Lexus’ new corporate identity, incorporating the new Lexus spindle grille frontal design.
The new corporate design language strikes a balance between IS’ smooth, elegant lines and powerful road presence.
The tight, sporting proportions of the body are formed by distinct character lines flowing out from the spindle grille, which passes through the base of the A-pillars and tightens up towards the rear of the vehicle.
These clear styling lines clearly differentiate the body from the cabin, and emphasise the wide flare of the wheel arches to give the new IS a broad, powerful stance.
In profile, the strong horizontal beltline shows off larger rear tyres and a lowered centre of gravity.
The mass of the cabin itself is concentrated rearwards, visually applying weight to the rear tyres to enhance the perception of traction.
A rising crease line flowing from the lower body, through the rear wheel arch and into the rear lamp clusters adds sweeping elegance to the sedan’s sporting profile.
The exterior design incorporates a new, pronounced headlamp cluster design with Lexus’ trademark L-shaped DRLs, located independently below the headlamp.
F SPORT models are differentiated by an exclusive grille and front bumper design.
The ‘waistline’ of the F Sport grille is higher than on standard models, increasing the area of the lower grille to make it capable of drawing in a larger volume of cooling air appropriate to a sporting performance vehicle.
F SPORT models will be available in a choice of eight exterior colours of which one, White Nova, has been developed exclusively to reflect the pure, sporting nature of the marque, as represented by the LFA supercar.
Interior design
The new IS interior design creates a comfortable, focused, ergonomically ideal environment from which the driver can fully exploit the new Lexus compact sedan’s superb driving dynamics.
The new IS’ increased width and wheelbase length provide significantly improved levels of rear seat comfort and luggage capacity.
The combination of extended wheelbase and a thinner front seat design generates best-in-class knee room and improved accessibility.
Usability and storage flexibility have been further enhanced by the adoption of new, 60:40 split-folding seats.
Cabin material, trim and finish refinement is complemented by the latest advances in HMI technology and a high quality analogue clock with surface-emitting illumination.
The centre console incorporates Lexus-first electrostatic switches to control air conditioning temperature with the touch of a finger.
An exclusive, highly supportive F SPORT seat design uses an ‘integrated foaming’ construction method, ensuring that there are no gaps between seat upholstery and filling, to combine excellent comfort with outstanding lateral holding performance.
Both the seat hip point and the angle of the new, LFA-inspired steering wheel have been lowered and steering reach adjustment increased, creating a more sporting driving position.
F Sport models inherit the innovative driver’s meter with moving centre ring from the LFA.
Bespoke F Sport trim detailing includes a perforated leather finish to the steering wheel and shift knob, metal film 3D-effect ornamentation, black seat stitching, and aluminium pedals and scuff plates.
A choice of three F Sport interior colour schemes includes a new Dark Rose finish which is exclusive to the marque.
The all-new IS model range will include IS 250, IS 350 and F Sport models across the full range.
A live webcast of the reveal, held in the Cobo Center, will be streamed via www.lexus-global.com on Wednesday January 16 at 1:30am (AEDT).
