DENZA Gets a Boss: BYD Taps Mark Harland to Lead Premium EV Push
BYD Australia & New Zealand has appointed Mark Harland as Chief Operating Officer of DENZA, the brand’s premium electric arm, effective immediately. It’s a major move as BYD sharpens its focus on luxury EVs – and it’s Harland’s second act with the brand, having helped deliver BYD’s stunning local growth via EVDirect.
DENZA isn’t some badge-job experiment. After founding the brand back in 2010 with Mercedes-Benz, BYD took full control in 2024, quietly turning DENZA into a fully-owned premium marque. The result? Plush cabins, sophisticated tech, and a product lineup aimed squarely at the Euro set.
Harland brings 25 years of global auto expertise, from GM to AGL, where he helped pilot one of Australia’s first EV subscription programs. More importantly, he knows the local market, the dealer landscape, and what makes Aussie buyers tick.
“I’m excited to continue my BYD journey with DENZA,” Harland said. “This brand will redefine luxury in Australia with world-class innovation and craftsmanship at an exceptional price.”

His appointment follows Stephen Collins stepping into the BYD COO role last month, marking a top-down leadership refresh as the company eyes the premium end of the EV spectrum.
DENZA’s D9 electric people mover is expected to be among the first to hit local shores, after quietly going on sale in Hong Kong earlier this year. It’s big, brash, and electric — think Lexus LM, but less boardroom and more board shorts. A luxury electric people mover? Brave move. That segment’s already a graveyard — let’s see how it goes.
According to BYD Australia GM Wing You, “Mark has been a solid and important part of BYD’s success in Australia. His experience will be critical in shaping the next phase of BYD’s future in this market.”
DENZA’s post-Mercedes makeover includes a refreshed lineup – the D9, N7, and N8 already selling in China – with more models on the way. The naming strategy? D, E, N, Z, and A. Subtle? No. Strategic? Absolutely.
With Harland now at the helm, expect DENZA to make waves – and ruffle a few feathers – as BYD doubles down on the luxury EV scene.
