Top 10 Brands are:

  • Toyota 35,194
  • Mazda 16,830
  • Hyundai 12,203
  • Mitsubishi 11.381
  • KIA 11,371
  • Ford 9,811
  • Nissan 7.580
  • Subaru 5,862
  • Volkswagen 5,731
  • MG 5,425

Kia, who is now 5th, is less than 1,000 sales behind sister company Hyundai, but Toyota remains no.1.

The last few years have been hard for the automotive industry. Many factors are responsible, and in the last year, COVID 19 has hit every industry.

Brands to watch this year are:

KIA has been steadily climbing, and is double where they were just a few years ago.

MG, who started operating in Australia just a few years ago, has a small range, and small prices.

Top 10 Models in Feb are:

  • Toyota Hilux 4808
  • Ford Ranger 2900
  • Toyota Rav4 2750
  • Toyota Landcruiser 2521
  • Toyota Corolla 2427
  • Hyundai i30 2210
  • Isuzu D-Max 1765
  • Mitsubishi Triton 1761
  • Mitsubishi ASX 1489

Of the top 10, only 2 are passenger vehicles continuing the shift away from sedans, hatches, and wagons, to SUVs and pick-up style utes.

Hybrid and EV sales are up. Electric vehicle sales of 558 units, is almost double this time last year. 20 hydrogen cars have been registered, in this brand new segment, and hybrid and plug-in hybrids are 9,580 and 343 units respectively.

Price and safety continue to feature in buying decisions. The industry’s downward spiral appears to be reversing, so watch this space. We think this year will pick up significantly, provided the withdrawal of covid support for workers and the unemployed does not cause further recession.

The ball is firmly in the court of the government.
