MG, once famous for little British sports cars and now better known for Chinese-built family SUVs, has lobbed a curveball into Australia’s favourite battleground – the ute market. Yep, the MG U9 is real, and it’s headed for your local dealership in late 2025, complete with dual-cab practicality, a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel heart, and a name that sounds more like a boy band than a workhorse.
Unveiled at the Melbourne Motor Show, the U9 marks MG’s first stab at Australia’s second-best-selling segment – and they’ve come loaded for bear. Under the bonnet sits a 164kW four-cylinder engine, and while full specs are still under wraps, MG insists it’s been tuned for Aussie conditions, which hopefully means it’ll cope with more than just a Coles car park.
The big boss, Peter Ciao, says it’s a “turning point” for the brand, and look – he might be right. MG’s already flogging SUVs like fairy bread at a kids’ party, so throwing a ute into the mix makes sense. But with heavy hitters like HiLux, Ranger, and RAM dominating the scene, the U9 has its work cut out.

Interestingly, the U9 will also moonlight as the LDV Terron 9, so if you’re experiencing déjà vu, you’re not losing it. This isn’t MG reinventing the ute – it’s more like them borrowing their cousin’s truck and slapping on some lip gloss.
Still, MG promises value, comfort, and a whopping 10-year/250,000km warranty. That’s a spicy carrot for tradies and weekend warriors alike – especially those keen to break free from the Ford-and-Toyota duopoly.
We’ll hold our judgment until we’ve driven it, preferably with a load in the tray and mud on the tyres. But for now, one thing’s clear: MG’s ute dreams are no longer just talk. They’ve brought a proper contender to the party – and it’s dressed to impress.
And yes, it has cupholders.
