Lexus has confirmed that the LBX Morizo RR concept will enter production and be on Australian market in the first half of 2025. This high-performance, limited-volume version of the recently launched LBX combines familiar Lexus luxury with proper sporting. The concept version was first shown at the Tokyo Auto Salon held in January.

Developed alongside master driver Akio Toyoda, known by his social handle ‘Morizo’, the new addition to the LBX lineup comes with a intercooled turbocharged 1.6-litre inline 3-cylinder engine, a direct shift 8-speed automatic transmission, electronically controlled full-time AWD, sports suspension and tires, and performance brakes. These components work together to redefine the Lexus Driving Signature (LDS).

Mr. Toyoda states that the LBX Morizo RR is designed to feel natural and rewarding to drive while being as comfortable as a favourite pair of sneakers.

This is one design look that Lexus got right the first time.

Innovations and Performance

LBX Morizo RR introduces a world-first Response-Enhancing Damping Structure (REDS). This pioneering technology uses thermoset resin in the front lower control arms to enhance steering response and feel across all speeds and driving conditions, further adding to the LDS.

Lexus Australia Chief Executive John Pappas remarks that the LBX Morizo RR exemplifies Lexus’s commitment to building smart and stylish luxury cars that are super exciting to drive. “The LBX Morizo RR encapsulates the exhilarating driving qualities of the LFA supercar into an everyday compact luxury car. It shows our passion for cars and builds excitement around our brand.”

Advanced Engineering and Design

The LBX Morizo RR builds on the LBX Luxury and Sports Luxury grades. The lightweight compact platform is made stiffer at the front, while the rear is also rigid but now wider to incorporate the AWD differentials, double wishbone sports suspension, and 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in wider 235mm performance tires. Sibling LBXs make do with a torsion beam rear end, something not suited to a real sports car. LBX is the LEXUS version of Toyota’s Yaris Cross we tested back in 2021.

The driving position is lowered by 10mm from the hip point for greater car connection.

Lexus LBX Morizo RR Chief Designer Kunihiko Endo credits racing driver Masahiro Sasaki for his integral role in the car’s development. “When you press the accelerator, it delivers performance that exceeds expectations. This high-performance model fosters enjoyable dialogue with the car, evoking smiles and an exhilarating sense of the extraordinary.”

1.6-litre Intercooled Turbo Engine

The LBX Morizo RR’s 1.6-litre inline 3-cylinder turbocharged engine with an intercooler (G16E-GTS) gives those on board a sports driving experience. It is rich in power with 206kW and packed with 390 Nm of torque available from 3,250 to 4,600rpm for rapid mid-range thrust. Responsiveness is further enhanced by significant weight reduction of major engine components.

During normal engine operation, the turbo wastegate valve remains closed for instant torque delivery and no turbo lag. The engine’s performance delivery is tuned to keep with Lexus requirements of smooth and refined acceleration.

Electronically-Controlled Full-Time AWD

The electronically-controlled AWD system splits torque distribution between the front and rear wheels based on driving conditions, ensuring confident and precise handling. Pressing the AWD MODE switch locks the system into 50:50 AWD, equalizing traction on all four wheels for improved stability on slippery surfaces. A Limited Slip Torsen rear differential is available, rapidly distributing optimal torque to the left and right wheels for sharp acceleration out of corners and stable control on constantly changing road surfaces.

Transmissions Tuned for Maximum Driving Enjoyment

Two specially developed transmissions add an extra layer of excitement for driving enthusiasts: a direct shift 8-speed automatic offering rapid quick-fire changes, and the first-ever Lexus 6-speed manual gearbox featuring Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) technology for smoother and seamless gear changes.

This rev-matching feature is one borrowed from GR Corolla and GR Yaris.

Bespoke Aero Sports Design

The LBX Morizo RR sits 10mm lower than its LBX siblings, with exclusive 19-inch alloy wheels and aerodynamic design improvements. The unique front bumper and grille enhance aerodynamic and cooling performance, while body-coloured flared wheel arches and unique lower side sills further differentiate the Morizo from lesser LBXs.

Tazuna Interior Concept and Refined Lexus Cabin

Lexus interiors centre around the driver through the Tazuna concept, with all controls intuitively placed for ease of use. Sculptured front sports seats are comfortable for everyday driving while offering extra lateral support for high-speed cornering. The leather sports steering wheel gives drivers the feeling of luxury even in high-speed cornering.

The LBX Morizo RR joins the LBX lineup in the first half of 2025. Final specifications and pricing for the Australian market will be announced later.
