We’ve been in LEXUS’ new NX 450h+ this week, and its infotainment system is a delight.
Normally it wouldn’t warrant a shoutout, but it has made life much easier for anyone buying a LEXUS in future. In fact, We think it is one of the best in the business.
The system uses a 10” digital driver panel, which is nothing unusual, except the silly physical ring that once sat in the middle of the display is gone. It is augmented by a very nice HUD (head up display) in full colour and widescreen. Nothing new there either.
This is where LEXUS owners are going to notice something fabulous.
Steering wheel buttons are touch sensitive, changing function depending on the menu. You slide your finger to wherever you want to make a selection on the cross-shaped control, and press to confirm. Once you touch it, the options and instructions show up in the HUD. Now, that is new.

In my best Kath and Kim voice, “there’s a noice 14” TV screen in the middle. It’s noice, it’s different, it’s unusual.”
The landscape mode tablet has fixed controls on the right, where the driver can easily reach them. There are large colour backlit dials for climate control. Each menu selection is easily visible with nothing more than a few clicks away.
The screen has a hide-away menu along the bottom edge to give maps more real estate. We found find the way from function to function to be fairly intuitive, with most options to be exactly where you expect them. Previous LEXUS systems operated by a difficult touch pad on the centre consoles. Later models added touch screen functionality, but still used the touch pad primarily. Apple CarPlay/Android Auto arrived a few years ago, negating some of the difficulty.
Gay readers tell us they like things simple and defined. They like choice, but not to be bombarded with data, making the choice difficult.
It differs from the Volkswagen Golf R system (review click here) we tested recently, whose fixed buttons were small and not backlit. They were difficult to find and use if the operator is not familiar.
LEXUS has made using the system slightly easier with voice control “Hey LEXUS.”
Neither the voice or onscreen controls are as easy as the Google system in Volvo/Polestar (Review HERE) , but comes close.
