We’ve been talking electric cars this week,

To round off the discussion, we’ve summarized the good and bad points of EV ownership.

Buying an EV:

This can be the biggest decision of your life but it is not a matter of if, but when. Car makers world wide are changing, and they’re doing it now, not in 30 year’s time.

Government has mandated the change elsewhere, but the Australian Federal government prefers coal and oil to sun and wind. State governments have taken up the challenge, and local councils have also thrown their hats into the ring.

Incentives may change but EVs will remain expensive until the cost of batteries comes down. The right time to buy is when you decide that you are ready for change.

Charging:

The ability to charge at home will eliminate most of the issues you’ll encounter. Take the plunge and install a wall charger, you’ll thank yourself in the long run.

Strata unit dwellers will have to use public charging.

Like most places in the world, public charging is hit and miss. Some is fast, some is slow, and others do not work. User say they have to have a number of different aps because most chargers don’t accept tap and go.

Charging comes in many forms ranging from slow home charging to ultra-rapid public, and the rate of charge varies with it. Although many car makers claim otherwise, charging to 80% most of the time, will extend the battery life.

What We Need to Make Things Easier

We need a single app that identifies and unifies all charging, shows whether or not they are available and working, and a single way to pay.

Street charging is much needed, with fees for overstayers. The boom in EV ownership means the existing infrastructure is getting busier. You arrive on low charge so can’t go elsewhere, and have to wait. That is not ideal.

Unit dwellers to have bays set aside for Charge Points in the future, but that won’t help now. Most will still need to take advantage public points.

Legislation should include a tax drop for EVs under $100,000. Stamp duty and transfer fees might be dropped.

Other incentives might take the form of free parking, free tolls, the ability to use transit lanes.

Supply

Supply continues to be an issue for most brands and is expected to continue through 2023.
