Toyota, Australia’s Best Selling Brand for a Staggering 25 Years

Toyota marked 25 years as Australia’s best-selling automotive brand by promising to bring more of a customer focus to its operations.

Vice President Sales, Marketing & Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said “We are progressively upgrading our range with vehicles that have new levels of connectivity, advanced safety features that are moving ever-closer to autonomous driving, shared services like KINTO and a rising number and widening range of electrified vehicles.”

Toyota 223,642 sold new vehicles in 2021, Toyota’s third-highest total on record. Like all car makers, 2020 was a lean year, even so, Toyota managed 204,801 sales for 2020, and 205,766 delivered for 2019.

Toyota was market leader in 1991-94, 1998, 2000 and has led continuously since 2003. Significantly, Toyota has been the top commercial vehicles retailer since 1979, an unbroken run of 43 years. Toyota is the only brand to achieve 200,000 sales per a year, and has exceeded that figure for 17 of the past 18 years.

More records tumbled in 2021, with a record 65,491 hybrid-electric vehicle sales. This was 29.3% cent of Toyota’s total sales, as electric vehicles’ market acceptance hits new highs.

Toyota’s 21.3% market share includes HiLux (52,801 sales), Australia’s best-selling vehicle for the sixth year in a row. It seems like only yesterday that SUV and commercial vehicles were a small portion of the market. Now, it is passenger car sales that are dwarfed by SUV/commercial vehicle sales.

RAV4 is Australia’s best-selling SUV, with 35,751 of which 72.3% were electrified, and Corolla (28,768 sales) is the nation’s best-selling passenger car.

For two years in a row Toyota achieved the best-selling brand, best selling vehicle (HiLux), best selling  commercial vehicle (also HiLux), best selling  SUV (RAV4), and best selling  passenger car (Corolla).

LandCruiser had its best year ever, with 47,932 sales. These included: LandCruiser Prado at 21,299, LandCruiser 70 Series with 13,981 sales, and LandCruiser wagon selling 12,652 units

2022 will see a facelifted RAV4 range, the Corolla Cross SUV , the all-new GR86 a refreshed 70 Series workhorse, and finally, the details of Toyota’s first BEV, the bZ4X SUV.”
