This Bulli is VW’s first all-electric camper/van/microbus. The Transporter series has been universally admired (and desired) since the Type 2 appeared in 1950. That was Volkswagen’s 2nd model, and many have passed its portals since.

ID.Buzz seems to have recaptured that pizazz that was totally owned by the 1950 model. German pre-sales started in May, and since, 21,000 orders have been taken.

“Our ID. Buzz created a real BUZZ in 2022 – not just here, but all over the world”, said Lars Krause, Member of Board of Management VWCV for Sales and Marketing. “We are very happy with the launch of our first all-electric Bulli from Hannover. Now, our task is to further ramp up production of all models and to deliver the vehicles to our customers and fans.” Krause continued: “In the last few months, we’ve already succeeded in doing this and we’ve been able since September to increase deliveries to customers significantly. In November and December, we sent out 30 per cent more vehicles than in the same period last year.”

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV) delivered 328,600 in 2022, down from 407,400 the previous year. The Ukraine war, Covid, and supply chain issues have taken an unfortunate toll on the car industry generally.

A few bright points were the release of the new Amorok whose deliveries began very late last year. Of the 10,800 ID. Buzz built, 6,000 have been delivered the the very few markets where it is currently available.

The Asia/Pacific region saw 13,000 deliveries of which 8,100 came to Australia, in which 12,500 were sold in 2021.

Worldwide figures:

ID. Buzz
T-series
Amarok
Caddy
Crafter
Electric model
6,000
142,600 (-14.3 per cent)
39,800 (-12.2 per cent)
80,700 (-5.2 per cent)
59,400 (-4,6 per cent)
7,500 (+109 per cent)

One thing has become clear, despite claims by the head of Toyota recently, electric vehicles will soon dominate the market. The rise over the last 5 years has been supported by government incentives, and a world hungry to abolish oil.
