Inside

3008 is modern without being OTT. The cockpit-style driver’s pew is surrounded by a bevy of gadgets that do everything but make a hot coffee for you. Ti-Cockpit takes a while to get used to. The seats are supportive and the twin zone climate control.

The French are clever when it comes to adding je nes sais quoi. You aren’t aware of the quality, but you feel it is there. Shiny surfaces aside, there is nothing in the wrong place with the exception of the hideous Cruise Control swtich, located on the paddle below the indicators.

Functions are accessed through the piano key toggles, and then the menu on the touch screen. The Slightly clumsy system look pretty but you’d be much better simply having a home screen from which charms could be selected.

Unlike 5008, 3008 has only 2 rows which is a much better use of space.

The engine and Drive

121kw needs to be more, and that’s all there is to it.

Active safety abounds, with AEB and lane keeping, and blind spot control wraps around him, concealed beneath a veneer of understated luxury. The dash sweeps right around the occupants, anchored by a large central LCD displaying information in their “i-Cockpit.

Our base model Allure had a 6-speed auto to go with the slightly breathless 4-pot. It ran out of puff with 4 blokes on board, with a 0-100 too leisurely to mention.

We did a mini road trip which was incredibly comfortable. Ride is luxurious, matched by a great sound system with DAB and CarPlay. It needs AWD to be a serious contender. Brands which at least have AWD as an option are doing much better in the sales race. Peugeot is up against the like of LEXUS NX which has a similarly stylish visage, and offers models with AWD. While Peugeot sold 173 units of 3008, LEXUS sold 1,120 for the same period so far this year. LEXUS is posher, I hear you say, so let’s look at others in the same category as 3008:- Toyota Rav 4 (13,844) Mazda CX-5 (9,504), and Subaru Forester (5,006). The figures tell us where buyer tastes lie, and all of those brands have an AWD offering in the range.

Conclusion:

3008 is attractive, drives nicely, and is fairly well equipped. 3 engine options are all well and good, but the lower powered version is a complete waste of time. Not only is 121kw inadequate, it is made worse by the 6 speed auto, as smooth as it is. The 8-speed transmission should be the standard, as should the 133kw 1.6 engine.

Other than that, we thoroughly enjoyed the week. A slightly lower price would make the front wheel drive 3008 a more attractive proposition.
