2023 Peugeot 408 In a Big Plastic Ball: What’s Inside?

Following the world-wide reveal of PEUGEOT 408, an activation saw the new model in a plastic ball reminiscent of an old Coke ad.

The sphere is able to roll and rotate the PEUGEOT 408 so it can be shown at all angles.

Peugeot and Citroën are under the Stellantis umbrealla, with Australia being the only market where they’re sold jointly rather than as separate brands.

PEUGEOT 408 follows sister company, Citroen, in releasing a small coupé style 5-door hatch model. We reviewed the Citroen C4 here. The style has become popular among SUV-come-hatchback buyers, especially as the electrified market begins to explode.

Outside:

The fastback silhouette looks sleek, and the body-coloured grille has the new PEUGEOT emblem featuring the head of a lion. The rear reflects the coupé effect created by the sloping roof, and has a striking set of 3-claw LED lights.

PEUGEOT 408 has 20-inch rims with a “disruptive geometric” design. The fang-shaped light signature brings to mind a nod to Peugeots of the past, such as 208 and 308.

PEUGEOT 408  dimensions:

  • length 4.69m
  • Height 1.48m
  • wheelbase of 2.79m
  • second row legroom 188mm

Inside

PEUGEOT 408 uses the next generation PEUGEOT i-Cockpit.

It has a small diameter steering wheel with the driver looking over it to the digital driver display.

A 2nd LCD screen displays infotainment, with further controls on virtual buttons on a panel below it. A second row of virtual buttons sit beneath the main row in the style of the i-Cockpit which used physical levers.

This leaves the centre console crisp and clean with controls for gears, parking brake, and start.

The cabin continues the brand’s move towards a more premium feel.

Driver assistance and safety systems use by six cameras and nine radars to provide:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go function
  • Night Vision, which warns of animals, pedestrians or cyclists ahead before they appear in the high beam
  • Long-range blind spot monitoring (75 metres)
  • Rear Traffic Alert, which warns of a potential hazard when reversing

408 includes has two rechargeable hybrid drivetrains of 180 and 225bhp respectively, and a 130bhp 1.2-litre PureTech 3-cylinder petrol-only engine. The 3 engine options use  an 8-speed EAT8 automatic gearbox. The all-electric version will follow in a few months with details to be released shortly.

Design focus on aerodynamics, weight reduction (from 1396kg) and low-emission engines have given PEUGEOT 408 low economy figures, with details soon..

PEUGEOT 408 will launch early 2023 overseas. Production begins in Mulhouse, France, for the European market, and in the Chengdu factory in China soon after.
